Commerce Middle School provides students with the advantages of a small town as well as access to educational and cultural opportunities in Athens and beyond in Atlanta.
Commerce Middle School (CMS) is a 5th - 8th grade school. CMS had 496 students enrolled at the end of FY16; an increase of 42 students from FY14.
CMS has twenty regular education teachers, six special education teachers, one business education teacher, one PE teacher, one art teacher, one health teacher, a part-time band director, six paraprofessionals, and five food service employees.
The administrative team consists of one principal, one assistant principal, one counselor, one library media specialist, a part-time nurse, and two clerical staff. There is one team of teachers per grade level. In the 5th - 7th grades, each team is comprised of a Math, English-Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies, Science, and a Reading teacher. In the 8th grade, the Spanish teacher takes the place of the Reading teacher.
A typical student day at CMS provides many opportunities for learning. The state mandated curriculum is used by our teachers as they provide instruction. Each student has five core classes each day along with a connections class. Connections classes are rotated every nine weeks giving students an opportunity to be introduced to multiple offerings, except band which is a year-long course. Teams are also provided with a twenty minute guided study/recess period each day. This extra segment in the schedule allows teams to provided extra learning time (ELT), individual tutoring, and student activity time.
CMS offers extra-curricular and co-curricular activities with opportunities to participate in many sports including: Softball, Football, Cheerleading, Basketball, Golf, Track, Baseball, Soccer, and Tennis for our athletes.
Along with athletics, CMS offers clubs and programs that are quite popular, including: Jr. Tome Society, Jr. Beta club, FBLA, Game Club, Student Government, and this year both Drama and Music Club are being introduced.
The purpose of Commerce Middle School is to engage students in successful learning opportunities while building character and confidence, in order to be well-prepared for their high school experiences. Tigers Commit to Success at CMS !
