WARNING: Your dentist here might really be just a student.

One of the dentists at the Dental Clinic in Pittsburg is Scott Nearing, DDS. First, some background on Dr. Nearing, who decided to let his dental student pose as a dentist and work on me without his supervision. You can easily find all of this background information. Just google: Scott Nearing DDS.

Sharing this information may seem extreme, but so is willfully deceiving a patient into accepting dental treatment from an unsupervised, non-licensed student.

SCOTT NEARING, DDS ------ BACKGROUND

***April 1989 to May 1993*** Dr. Nearing wrote and presented more than 100 fictitious prescriptions to local pharmacies for controlled substances and ordered narcotic and benzodiazepine controlled substances from a wholesale drug company, all for his personal use.

***05/01/89 to  04/27/93*** Issued approximately 188 fraudulent prescriptions for Schedule II and III controlled substances.

***03/27/93 to 06/10/93*** Ordered approximately 1700 dosage units of Vicodin, Darvocet N-100 and Valium from two drug wholesalers.

***06/23/93*** Surrendered his DEA Certificate of Registration.

***06/08/94*** Pled guilty to fraudulently obtaining a Schedule III narcotic controlled substance.

***07/11/94*** Pled guilty to acting “knowingly or intentionally to acquire or obtain possession of a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception, or subterfuge.”

***09/19/94*** Placed on probation for four years. Sentenced to four months home confinement. Ordered to participate in a substance abuse treatment program. Required to pay a $1,000.00 fine.

***1994*** License suspended.

***01/16/98*** Respondent's dental license was suspended for twelve months for not attending Impaired Provider Program.

***1999*** Practicing without a license.

***2000*** Suspended new license while he underwent additional rehabilitation. Respondent then entered a program run by the Professional Renewal Center (Center) of Lawrence, Kansas. This included intensive psychotherapy and treatment for a previously undiagnosed problem, which the Center had discovered.

***2005*** Ordered to not write prescriptions for himself and to attend Caduceus meetings for drug addiction.

***06/29/09*** Satisfied Order of a Kansas Dental Board Order of Completion from May 22, 2000 in which he was required to pay a fine of $5,000 and successfully complete the Kansas Dental Impaired Provider Program.

***11/05/10*** Disciplined and fined $1,000 by the Kansas Dental Board for allowing an unlicensed dental assistant to practice dentistry by placing a final crown.

MY EXPERIENCE

Very disappointed. Dr. Nearing uses the clinic in Pittsburg as a training ground for dental students. On my most recent visit, I was greeted by a student who presented herself as a dentist, but gave her first name only. I specifically asked her if she was a dentist, to which she replied, "Yes, I am." I asked a dental assistant if the "dentist" was a doctor of dentistry, to which she replied, "Yes, she is." The "dentist" was not at all good with the needle. Next, she shattered a molar while trying to remove an old filling, leaving only about half a tooth. I asked her at this point if she was a fully-trained dentist, to which she replied, "No, I'm not." Dr. Nearing was not even present until he had to come over and fix the mess. My tooth is much worse off now than before. More importantly, he allowed his student, who is not very skilled, to present herself as a dentist. I have also found Dr. Nearing's work in the past to be less than satisfactory. I do not recommend this dentist, especially at the Pittsburg Clinic, where you will very likely be an unwitting training dummy.

Absolutely best dentist I've been to and I have anxiety about the dentist. The dentist was very gental unlike the other dentist I've been too.

All of family has been cared for by Dr. Neering. It can sometimes be hard to get to see them but they are good.
