I highly support small businesses like Congressional Aquarium for the reasons below. First, the staff is extremely friendly and respectful. They ask if you need help finding anything, and either help you find it, or allow you to browse the store on your own. Second, each of the staff members are very knowledgeable in their respective areas, but know their limitations, and point you to the subject matter expert that you need. They have a vast assortment of livestock including marine and fresh water fish and invertebrates, and even sell reptiles, along with aquariums, decorations and food - everything needed for a hobbyist. In support of community, they stock a number of fish that are bred locally and offer discounts for military personnel. If you are looking for a quality fish store that excels in customer service and educates aquarium hobbyists in addition to providing excellent products, check out Congressional Aquarium. You will not be disappointed!

Tropical lagoon in Silver Spring is better. Congressional has a good selection. But fish died in my established aquarium after two days. Could not get refund or exchange because I waited a week to call. Have shopped there often. No more.

Nicer than going to a PetSmart or equivalent large store on terms of variety, and the animals seem to be marginally healthier. Their prices could be better, but are still worth the convenience over buying online and paying for shipping, or finding local breeders. The parking lot is small, you can find additional parking in the shopping center above/behind. They get especially busy on the weekends, as it seems families come by with kids to entertain, but since they're not there to buy anything, assistance is still easy to come by. Quality of service ranges from being constantly asked if you need help, to needing to stop by the cashier desk for help. Sometimes an employee will ask useful questions to ensure your purchase will be compatible with your tank, while other times an employee's answers to your questions will be to Google it. They have a return policy, but be sure to read it at time of purchase! I've returned a fish that died in an established tank after purchase within their return timeframe and I had no issue receiving a replacement at no cost.

The staff are knowledgeable, helpful, and they go beyond what is expected. They try to keep stocked, but with the big box stores lacking effort after overrunning the mom&pops stores, this store is iconic! Shop local! Support local!

I gave them 2 stars because they do have good fish but at the same time I own a ton of animals including fish and reptiles. I was very concerned about the treatment of the reptiles. I was a daily customer and one day I asked if the bearded dragon who was clearly having seizures was getting vet care and they said no. They didn’t provide that there. They also said some of the reptiles that had only been there for a few days but I’ve seen them for the past month or more. They only care about money. I hope that people read this and try to document or place a review when they see a neglected animal. Unfortunately there live mice are good for My snake so I must continue getting the mice from there since not many other places provide them. If I could find another place I would.
