Congressional Cemetery

About

Still an active cemetery with plots available, Congressional Cemetery is owned by Christ Church and has been operated by the nonprofit Association for the Preservation of Congressional Cemetery since 1976.

Story

Founded in 1807, the cemetery is the final resting place of such notables as John Philip Sousa, J. Edgar Hoover, Vice President Elbridge Gerry, William Wirt, General Macomb and Push-ma-ta-ta. But as we say, you don't have to be rich and famous to be buried here, you just have to be dead. Located on Capitol Hill among 35 bucolic acres fronting the Anacostia River.

I just have to say that the ppl here are truly amazing!! My fam and I thought that u had to be part of Congress or military to be here, but u don't. They take regular ppl as well. My fam and I had really been going thru the Sunday interment struggle because a lot of cemeteries do not have Sundy interment. If they do, they're only open until 3pm at the latest. Mr. Paul Williams (President) made it happen for us!! He was so accommodating. He worked with our 4:30pm time, we could pay in all the forms of payment we had available (check, cash, card), and it was a big weight lifted. I will forever be grateful to this place. Big ups to Mr. Williams, Crystal Pate (director), and staff. The best part is that we live right across the street, so I can see my dad whenever I want. Great place , so check them out for your loved one or yourself.

I had heard about this cemetery but like most thought Arlington was the one to visit but had a couple of hours spare and decided to take visit. It was an incredible experience and wished I had more time to wander around the many poignant memorials.

A lovely place for a stroll. Historic and quirky. They have free walking tour brochures at the entrance. The LGBTQ tour brochure includes the claim they have the world's only dedicated LGBTQ section of gravesites and memorials. Famous people include photographer, Mathew Brady and composer, John Phillip Sousa. Beware off-leash dogs.

Unique place with lots of events going on every week. Go on a guided tour - you'll learn a lot about American/DC history. It also functions as a members dog park so it's pretty neat to see them running around as well.

This cemetery's got everything. Totem poles? Check. Bee boxes? Check. Vice presidents? Check. Dogs, geocaches, light-up tombstones, senators & representatives, statues of children with butterflies? Check. Worth the visit.
