My wife and I both applied our visa on 09/13/2017. Not many applicants. The office is cool and clean. The visa officer is very friendly and knowledgeable. Our passport copies do not meet their std. The officer made another copy for free. The passport photo required by Chinese consulate is smaller than US passport photo. You can use the auto photo machine in the consulate to take photo yourself. You pay $10 for 4 copies. I went to US embassy in Canada. Belgium embassy in China. I rate the Chinese consulate in Houston five stars, the US embassy in Calgary five stars. But, the Belgium embassy in China one star.

Honestly, I think it’s all about expectations when it comes to these kinds of places. I expected DMV experience and it was better than that so I’m giving it four stars. I also came with everything I needed so that helped. However , I’ve showed up twice and it’s been the wrong hours. I’ll post a pic of the hours. Online it says it closes at 5.. not true!! It closes at 3 with a hugeeeeee lunch break. Kind of annoying but it is what it is and if you know then you won’t have to make extra trips like me. You come stand in line, drop off passport with the application from online. Make sure you have everything… Flight plans, hotel accommodations, etc. Then they give you a little ticket with a date to come back. You come back, pay the fee and pick it up and go. You have to find street parking. Or pay $5 to use their little lot.

It will be a good experience if you have ALL material well prepared. Make sure you did a good research before going to this place. In fact, the personnel are much more humane than the US Consulate.

27-July-2017. To be honest, I am surprised this place has such a low rating. Yes, the working staff there were not very polite, not very patient, from the guard, clerk, to interview officer, however, they are extremely efficient from my experience if you have all the documents ready(once for my kid's travel document and once for my and my wife's stolen passports replace). When you see the amount of customers who are not able to read requirements online you understand why working staff don' t have a good attitude, I have to say if I were behind the glass, I'd be mad and cursing all day long....When I queued there, I even had to explain to the people with me why their photos are not gonna work or they MUST get a money order if they want the mail back service....

The employees at the Consulate are paid to make sure your submission meets their government's requirements. Never mind that the website doesn't tell you all the requirements - you have to do your research and find out what you need. If you have a US passport and are trying to get a tourist visa (staying in hotels, not invitation letter), this is what you need. Fill out the application. In ALL CAPS. On your computer. Print it one sided. If any field is blank, fill it with N/A or NONE. Names on all documents must match one another. If you don't know what to put in a field, Google. The application requires a photo, get it at a place that knows how to take a passport photo so it complies with rules. Glue or tape on application. Submit a copy of your current passport information page. If applicable, submit a copy of your most recent Chinese visa. If it's in a different passport, make a copy of that passport's information page too. Submit a copy of your driver's license. Submit your itinerary in China, specifically your flights to/from China and within China, and all hotel stays. Submit everything, even flights within the US to get to your flight to China. More is better. All documents, including itinerary need to have your name on it. If you are sharing a hotel room with someone, both names need to be on the reservation so you each have proof that you have a hotel room. There is one more form that we found on a visa service website--a description of our employer and our job there. We do not know if this was required (she didn't seem to read it) but we submitted anyway. This is what we did and we were successful in getting our visas on the first try. Some issues we heard: Two ladies attending a conference. One lady had paid both fees, so only her name was on the receipt. Both names need to be on the receipt. A man had a certified document which had been stapled, thus staple holes in the paper. This was not accepted (because they don't know what pages might be missing) We went on a Friday morning, arrived at 8:45 and lined up outside the building. We were done by 9:30.
