Welcome to Contra Costa Country Club
Welcome to the Club.
Meandering through oak, eucalyptus and redwoods that frame dramatic mountain and valley views, every round at Contra Costa is different, every one a treasure. While you’ll love every inch of our 6,550-yard course, the heart and soul of Contra Costa is our membership – like-minded families who share a passion for the game, unpretentious companionship and a rich social calendar that makes for fast friends and lasting relationships.
With a rich history, impressive membership and one of Northern California’s most acclaimed golf courses, this is that rare breed of country club that offers as much off the course as it does on. Central to the entire East Bay, the club sits on 145 verdant acres with views to Mt. Diablo, the perfect setting for championship golf and a vibrant year-round social calendar.
For the love of the game.
In 1925, Calvin Coolidge began his first term as president, Al Capone was taking over Chicago, and “Daddy” Rigg couldn’t stop thinking about golf. Rigg, the editor and publisher of the Martinez Daily Standard, had just played his first ever round... at the tender age of 70. But like so many before him, he fell in love with the game at once.
Rigg called on his friends, neighbors and business acquaintances to join him in creating a course for local enthusiasts. Soon after, the group found a large farm with oak-studded hills, rolling meadows and grand views of Mt. Diablo. They bought the farm, enlisted acclaimed golf architect A. Vernon Macan, and set to work. And in May of that year, they celebrated the official opening of Contra Costa Country Club. The club has since grown from 7 holes to become one of the premier clubs in Northern California.
It’s impossible not to join the fun.
The essential and defining aspect of any private club is membership itself, for beyond sport, it is the social fabric and shared experience that is the reason we belong. And it is surely that certain sense of belonging that defines Contra Costa – our family is united by a common thread that gives every visit the reassuring comfort of being right at home.
The calendar at Contra Costa is as entertaining as it is diverse. There are countless venues for all ages and skills – each an opportunity for good sport and companionship with new friends. Poolside barbeques are a magnet for families all summer. On the links our Junior, Women and Senior Teams compete against neighboring clubs. And almost every week there’s a tournament or invitational – legendary gatherings for which our club is well known. In short, there’s a robust and vibrant social calendar, and these are just a few of the member highlights throughout the year.
Our home.
The first clubhouse at Contra Costa Country Club was an old farmhouse that came with the land, resting on a gentle, oak-shaded knoll. In 1996, Contra Costa Country Club symbolically marked the metamorphosis of “private golf course” into “country club” by opening a new 22,600-square-foot, multi-level clubhouse facility. Importantly, this change did not mark any departure from the vision of its founders – the new clubhouse sits on the same picturesque oak-shaded knoll as the original 1925 farmhouse, and the views are as spectacular as they ever were.
The upper level is a spacious members’ grill and bar with high ceilings, excellent views, a cozy fireplace, and an intimate private dining room. The main level boasts an impressive pro shop and a 3,800-square-foot banquet room ideal for parties, receptions, dinners and dances. The lower level is dedicated to the with men’s and women’s locker rooms and shower facilities, card rooms, a snack bar and the club’s administrative offices.
600,000 gallons of summer.
The cornerstone of Contra Costa is surely the spacious clubhouse, offering spectacular views from atop a gentle, oak-shaded knoll. And steps away, the clubhouse includes an Olympic-sized pool and recreation area. Complete with picnic tables, barbecue facilities, lawns for sunning and play, and even a wading pool for the little ones, it is the scene for that most favorite staple of the summer – poolside family barbecues.
A four-season delight.
Those that cherish the game of golf consistently regard the historic course at Contra Costa as the best in the area. Playing to 6,550 yards at par 72, it’s a joy in all four seasons – challenging but fair, comfortably walkable, and landscaped with mature native oak, eucalyptus and redwood trees that frame dramatic views to Mt. Diablo and beyond.
Once a large farm abundant in dry, golden grass, the course today is a verdant and lasting testament to our membership’s dedication to the game. It has been through at least three major iterations, the most recent occurring in 1992 when Robert Muir Graves was commissioned to design new greens out of carpet-like bent grass, which has made them second-to-none in both quality and challenge throughout Northern California. The course plays longer and more difficult than it looks, which inspires our members to play again and again, doing whatever they can to drop a stroke or two.
