Reviews

An absolute necessity, as the last theater highlighting independent films in the Richmond area. I go whenever possible. 

    Some people have complained about the programming, and I concede that some lackluster films come here, particularly those bland dramas aimed toward the retiree set. (No disrespect to adventurous cinema loving retirees who form the base audience of many arts events!   However, there are sometimes treacly, sentimental historical pictures in indie theater's like Criterion meant to flatter audience's pretensions without being very well, ...good. 

    But great, diverse, challenging films wander through here often, when no Regal Cinemas will give them a home. The runs of "Your Name.", "The Handmaiden", and "Swiss Army Man" have been particular joys recently.  

    So show up in those seats, support this location, and mention the screenings you love to Movieland leadership. Let's make sure Criterion never shuts the door on indie film in Richmond.

Small theaters, confusing to find which one you are supposed to go in... no signs. And staff was just as confused as we were. Bathrooms were dirty. All this was on a weekday. We came because they screen movies here that they don't always screen at other theaters.

Very nice theater ...
clean .....seats were larger and more comfortable, then your typical movie house.  ... Cost a little more but you get what you pay for.

We saw Darkest Hour on Dec 30 in Richmond (3:40). The venue was too small for a first run movie expected to be a blockbuster. We bought tickets ahead of time, arrived early and still had to sit separately, with 2 of us sitting in the 3rd row from the front. It wasn't very comfortable.
