Cumberland Mountain State Park

About

Home of the largest masonry structure built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.

Story

Cumberland Mountain State Park is situated on the Cumberland Plateau, a segment of the great upland, which extends from western New York to central Alabama. It is said to be the largest timbered plateau in America. This 1,720-acre park was acquired in 1938 as a project of the Farm Security Administration to provide a recreational area for some 250 families selected to homestead on the Cumberland Plateau.

The Homestead Museum, located one mile from the park, depicts the Cumberland Homestead Community of the 1930's. This community built the park along with help from the CCC and WPA.

Mission

“To preserve and protect, in perpetuity, unique examples of natural, cultural, and scenic areas and provide a variety of safe, quality, outdoor experiences through a well-planned and professionally managed system of state parks."

We visited during freezing weather so the 50A service was great for heating. Also love the full hookup. Rangers and workers are very friendly. Only one loop is open at this time of year. Bathroom/bathhouse was nice and warm with plenty of hot water. For bathhouse cleanliness I would give a rating of average. The grounds were spotless.

We went up to the park to check out the cabins that we would be staying in on Easter weekend. The cabins are large and will fit our needs. Really wish it had more than one bathroom, as we will be getting ready for a wedding. I will review again after the stay because we will also be renting the recreation hall while we are there. I’ve seen other reviews about the staff not being nice. We will see after our visit. They were pleasant when we dropped by.

Very nice park. Plenty to do for the whole family. Nice cabins for accomdations. Went for just a day but will be returning for a extended stay in the future for sure. Also trials are marked well and well used, shouldn't have any problems staying on track.

A great buffet on Sundays of chicken, ham and roast beef or catfish. That's just the meats! Salad bar, soup, ice cream and desserts galore. Try the best banana pudding made from scratch! Oh yeah. That's why people drive from all over. The scenery is wonderful too! Even a gift shop!

The park is BEAUTIFUL! We stayed at the Mill House for two days. It was dirty, the graffiti in the bedrooms need to be addressed and covered and the lovely deck needs a scrubbing. My family will visit again but will not be staying overnight.
