D'Iberville is about three miles from the sandy beaches of Biloxi and the waters of the Mississippi Sound. The water, brownish in color from river runoff emptying into the Sound, is safe, and swimming is a local activity. Swimmers will find shallow water and calm waves. Larger waves from the Gulf of Mexico are blocked by a chain of barrier islands just off the Mississippi coast.
Barrier Islands
Horn, Cat, Petit Bois, East Ship and West Ship are five undeveloped barrier islands 10 to 12 miles off the Mississippi coast. Visitors can find miles of public white sand beaches and swim in the blue waters and large waves of the Gulf of Mexico, and possibly spot a dolphin nearby. On the island's south side, swimmers can enjoy the calmer waters of the Mississippi Sound. Locals usually travel by private boat to spend time on all the islands, but tourists typically end up on West Ship Island, the most popular stop and accessible only by ferry. West Ship Island has lifeguards during summer, restrooms, covered areas for picnics, beach chair and umbrella rentals, a snack bar and the historic Fort Massachusetts. Mississippi's barrier islands are part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore (nps.gov).
Water Park
For swimmers who want some thrills with their pool time, Gulf Islands Waterpark (gulfislandswaterpark.com) in Gulfport, about 14 miles from D'Iberville, has slides, play areas with activities and a wave pool that is used for swimming when the waves take a break from crashing. The park is open May through September and sells day and season passes.
