Lovely museum with a terrific collection. The highlight for me were the spectacular Diego Rivera murals commissioned by Ford, as well as important pieces by Van Gogh, Degas, Picasso & Matisse. But what really set this place apart from just about every other art museum I've been to on four continents were the docents. They would approach you in a gallery and ask if you had any questions, but were respectful if you just wanted to look at the art. What blew me away is that two separate docents on two different floors took our kids aside to talk to them about various pieces and engage them in a very genuine way allowing my wife and I a chance to really observe, for instance, the Rivera murals without distraction for 10-15 minutes. Those of you with small children (mine are 4 & 7) will realize what a treat this is. Overall a wonderful experience.

The Asian art exhibit is anemic even with nee additions. The staff is alternately aloof and smitten with their own sense of importance. The themes for each exhibit are loose and communicate little. They offer outreach programs to local communities but are secretive and feign elitism. Their hours are restricted so the place is never crowded when you can get in. The wall exhibits are sparse.

This museum is a great place to visit to see many famous works of art from not only Detroit, but also art from Europe, Asia, and Africa. I would definitely reccomend this place to anyone who is looking for a good place to spend some time.

Haven't been to the DIA since I was a kid. I have to admit that, base on what I remembered from my class field trips, I thought it would only take an hour or two to get through it. We were there for over 4 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. Wear your comfortable shoes. It is unbelievable that you can gaze upon very famous art works and have them only inches away. We didn't eat there but did make a note that they looked to have decent food at a fair price. The price of admission was a surprise... Other than paying for my visiting daughter and her boyfriend from California, it was free to residence so it didn't cost much. We were surprised at the variety of different media's of art... there is something for everyone and was a very worthwhile trip. It sparked our interest to get back down to Detroit and see the historical museum and science center.

Drove over an hour to find they're parking was full because they had literal rubble taking up over half of it. Drove for an hour looking for a spot and then drove home. I understand concept art but illustrating how Detroit is falling apart as a concept art exhibit in the parking area is a joke. I'll never go back.
