Experience where Rev. Vernon Johns and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. pastored and lived; an Interpretive Center, and the King-Johns Garden for Reflection

Story

In this National Historic Landmark, see the modest pulpit where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. first preached his message of hope and brotherhood. This church was also a center point of the Montgomery bus boycott. A large mural in the church depicts King’s civil rights crusade from Montgomery to Memphis.

Visitors to the Dexter Parsonage Museum will experience the actual residence where Dr. King and his young family lived between 1954 and 1960; an Interpretive Center, and the King-Johns Garden for Reflection. Parking is available for cars and tour buses.

The Interpretive Center, located adjacent to the Parsonage, features a gift shop, restroom facilities and an orientation room for viewing videos and discussion groups on Dr. King’s family, community, and pastoral life. The permanent exhibit in the Interpretive Center includes a timeline of photographs of the 12 Dexter pastors who lived in the Parsonage, a wall of Pastoral Wisdom (inspiring quotes from several pastors), unpublished photographs of Dr. King, Dexter members, civic/business leaders, and Montgomery ministers active in the bus boycott; and historical accounts on the bombing of the Parsonage and other significant events.

The nine-room clapboard Parsonage, built in 1912, has been restored to its appearance when Dr. King and his family lived there. Much of the furniture presently in the the living room, dining room, bedroom and study was actually used by Dr. King.

I visited the Parsonage with my students and Dr. Shirley Cherry, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable about Dr. King’s time in Montgomery. She even gave personal anecdote’s of her experiences knowing Dr. King and his family. She also imparted “life lessons” and wisdom on us. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Great hour tour. It was just what we were looking for on MLK day. The tour might not start off great. They have you watch a 10-15 min poorly produced video of the home’s history before going over. In my opinion they could completely cut that out. The talking and in-person storytelling was much better. The tour guide did an awesome job telling the story of 54-60 as though we were there. He had lots of anecdotal evidence and retrospection, meeting history. I don’t think he could have done a better job delivering historic wonderment to the kids in the group. He tailored the tour to the audience well. There may be some points that are more round about, but the tour is a well spent hour of your time while in Montgomery. Make sure to follow the Dexter Parsonage up with going to the MLK’s Church on 454 Dexter Ave!

My best friend and I stopped here on our way to Florida. So glad we did it was a moving experience. There is parking right behind the house and you walk in and pay your fee at the house next to the parsonage. It was $30 for all four of us to go and well worth the money. Plam on spending about an hour there. We did not have Dr Sherry give us a tour but the woman who did our tour was very knowledgeable and kind we enjoyed her very much. When you first go in there's a video that they show you and explain the people who were making a difference in the area leading up to Martin Luther King and the people that worked side-by-side with him. I love the way they tied and Rosa Parks and the bus boycott with what was going on at the time. It wasn't just about Martin Luther King but everybody who work together to make a difference. Next they take you into the parsonage itself and explain each of the rooms and the part they played in Martin Luther King's life and the decisions that were being made during that time. The most moving part of the whole house tour is at the end in the kitchen. They play one of his sermons that describes a moment that he had in the kitchen we all were moved to tears! Powerful moment.

Okay. Miss Shirley is one of the most incredible ladies I’ve ever met. I could listen to her presentation over and over again and never grow tired. If you want to experience Dr. King in a personal way, you should go here!

I've on a lot of historical tour's but Dr. Cherry is leap's and bounds above Outstanding! She's simply wonderful, God willing I will visit her tour again. The group was blown away by her delivery! Peace Terry L Muhammad of Houston, Texas.
