Hunt your own dinosaur bits and get credit for the find. Also some big chunks of iron ore. Lecture beforehand. Great for kids - they learn and get dirty too. No amenities.

The idea is bigger than the actual. One may think there's more actual digging but it's more of a dusting to find rocks that might have imprints of fossilized plants. It almost feels like they should place some fake bones out there so kids think they're finding something; otherwise, it's kids kicking dirt with their shoes. I am glad that this park is "free" and that people don't typically spend a lot of time there so it's easy to get in and out.

There is a small play structure outside the actual fossil area. The fossil area is open the first and third Saturday of the month from noon to 4pm. The fossil hunting is mainly looking at gravel to find things on the surface, no actual digging. Any fossils foound go to the Smithsonian, but you get credit for the find. It is really cool.

I would like to say my family and I enjoyed it. What I can say is that the 1st and 2nd talks given were very informative. Those gentlemen were great along with one tall guy in a white shirt with Dinosaur Park (I believe) on it and sandals. However, when we were allowed to look for fossils things plummeted. The park employees that help on that part were extremely rude and condescending. I was singled out for for "digging" when what I actually did was use my finger to move a rock to see if there was a fossil underneath. Now, please understand that I did what I observed EVERYONE else doing including the employees, but I was literally scolded like a child! There is a respectful way to talk to people. I observed a child literally picking up rocks and throwing them and not one person said a word to her. Then our child was yelled at by an employee and he didn't do anything! It's interesting that (at that time) there were no other human beings there that "looked" like our family. All the families that "looked" the "same" were not treated as we were. Another interesting fact is that I heard one employee tell another that he was sick of people thinking he was mean. Sir, if multiple people have told you that, perhaps there is truth to it. It's not what you say but HOW you say it. I'm so disappointed. Our son has LOVED dinosaurs and their history for the last 8 years and was super excited for this piece of history in our own backyard so to speak. So it was hurtful seeing him walk away feeling defeated after being yelled at for NO reason. If you're not happy with your job, please allow someone who has a passion for this to come in and take your place.
