Story

Down Home Kitchen was established by Mary Alice Proffitt in the fall of 2015 in beautiful and historic downtown Montpelier, Vermont, as a community-minded restaurant serving scratch-made, with love, homestyle cooking and baking like her mother, Sally, and grandmother, Miriam, made for her growing up in Atlanta, Georgia.

Down Home's caring and talented staff work hard each and every day to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for you, cooking and baking to order each customer's meal with the best quality local, free-range and organic ingredients whenever possible while still maintaining a price point and menu that is accessible to all in our diverse community.

The pleasure of having is in sharing. Please enjoy your food and fellowship and make yourself at home!

We ate breakfast here three days in a row. The food is outstanding. Everything was prepared fresh and well. The staff was warm, professional and friendly. Nice location/ambience. Too bad only here for a vacation....would love this in my home town!

I know that the concept of sausage gravy and biscuits is anathema to my friends from the UK, but if I can learn the deliciousness of Mushy Peas, you guys can learn to love this dish. Or don't, it leaves more for me...And the Sausage gravy with biscuits here was a delight. Seriously. This little cafe was a great sport on our Vermont trek. Served with a smile, lots of great townie talk around us, and a great cup of coffee. Going to check them out for a lunch of dinner next time through!

Great food, pretty decent prices. The best biscuits and gravy around here. Our last visit is was busy. We waited over 30 minutes for the food to arrive. It was not as bad previously. Staff are friendly and don't pester. (Update summer/fall 2017) For whatever reason, the one menu item I truly cared about (biscuits and gravy) has had a serious change in recipe to the point that after trying it a second time, it's terrible. Tastes nothing like it did before. Such a disappointment.

Less than an one!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Owner, please get in front of your staff, The gal I talked with was a minus 0. Does she think she in in NYC and can cop an attitude? Well, that does not display your Southern hospitality. Nor does she have proper phone skills!!!!!! Mary Alice you should know better! Bad customer service. I welcome you to call me for further details, Your food stands out as a 10 but given the FACT that those who answer the phone have no skills.......

Remarkably repurposed design. Food and service as good as it gets! Soft music in keeping with Neil Young theme augments comforting ambiance. This is SOHO in little ole' Montpelier, Vermont.
