East Chicago Central High School is a public high school in the industrial city of East Chicago, Indiana, located in the Chicago metropolitan area.History of Central High SchoolThe School City of East Chicago built Central High School in 1986 to replace East Chicago's two aging high schools. The two high schools Central replaced, East Chicago Washington and East Chicago Roosevelt High Schools were demolished when Central began operations. East Chicago Central's first semester began in the fall of 1986.When the school first opened there were about 2000 students attending the school. Many teachers from the former high schools came to teach at "Central." Most of the students that attend the school are Hispanic and/or African American. The two schools' enrollments had been declining since the 1960s due to an overall reduction in the City's population.Mandatory uniformity of colorsAll district students, except those with parent or religious waivers and those with too much financial hardship to abide by the rule, are required to abide by a dress code that restricts colors worn by students. Students may wear solid red, white, or navy blue shirts, including collared shirts, T-shirts, blouses, turtlenecks, sweaters, and sweatshirts. Students may wear navy blue bottoms, including trousers, skirts, skorts, culottes, jumpers, and shorts. Students may wear outfits from a "nationally recognized youth organization" such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts on meeting days.
