Good books and I love the name. But I will say that the owner could improve his customer service.

I live in Chicago & every time I make it down to Springfield I have to make a stop. I grew up in a used bookstore & know a quality place when I see one. I've followed this store over the years & love the fact it's right off the Old State Capitol. The fact that the Holy Land Diner moved over on Cook st is the only dark cloud to a visit for me.

First off, the owner is a total sweetheart. He is totally no pressure, look at your leisure type of guy. If your looking for someone to follow you around chatting non-stop -> not your guy. The owner Gary would rather let you find your own treasures, though he's happy to make suggestions if you ask.

Second, I don't know about the quality or type of books that one reviewer brought in... but the books the Elfshelf sells are like brand new for about $2.50 - $4.50 (it's been awhile prices may have changed). So dogeared, smoke stinky, stained, etc probably won't get the heart going pitter pat with bated anticipation of purchasing books to go into the "take a free book bin". & there are ton's of these type of books brought into the Elfshelf everyday.

If You are a total book junkie like me, you will see why I keep coming back.
