History: Captain C.P. Higgins and Francis L. Worden founded Missoula by establishing a trading market named Hellgate Village in 1860. It was followed by a sawmill and a flourmill, which the settlers called "Missoula Mills". Missoula continued to develop with the construction a road that connected Fort Benton, Montana with Walla Walla, Washington that passed through the valley. The development of Fort Missoula solidified the city’s position as a trading center. The University of Montana was opened in Missoula in 1893 and since its inception has strongly contributed to the growth and cultural richness of the city. Over the years Missoula has moved away from the logging industry and is now primarily a service oriented economy supporting the populations of the Missoula Valley as well as surrounding areas.
