It's hard when you really and truly want to like a place, but soon realize this sweet little thrift store benefiting the senior center is actually a shady place with little concern for it's customers. When you accept donations it's best to be honest and forward with your customers in regards to their purchases. A "no returns" policy isn't unheard of due to a lack of staff and time to test every single donation that comes through the door of a small thrift store like this, but dishonesty in order to get something sold is much less common these days. And it's becoming less and less common as people begin to realize there is a better way to do things. I've been in here a few times and have awkwardly overheard the same explanation given in regards to a few products being sold "as is". I ignored it until today. A sweet old couple was blatantly tricked into buying a broken product. Cheap though it may be, a lie is still a lie. I only noticed because it was a product that I recognized and have used before. A keurig. The sales representative explained that the reason it's sold "as is" and untested, is because they have no way to test it. A keurig. You plug it in and put water in it. He explained to this sweet old couple there's a special "machine" (a machine? to test a keurig??) they would need in order to see if it works. I don't care if you don't have time to clean a keurig and make sure it works before selling it, I really do not - but why lie in order to receive money for a senior center? It's not necessary! Just say you don't have the time or staff to test all donations. It's that easy. People will still buy the product even if it is a gamble. And honestly. If you work for this store and they've asked you to lie like this to bring in profits then you'd better be willing to sacrifice your social standing in the community as well as future employment opportunities. People will recognize you as a person that worked for a less than honest company and it won't be worth the money you made.
