The Farnsworth Art Museum celebrates Maine's role in American art

Story

Celebrating Maine’s Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America’s greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the nation's largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth.

The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, Maine, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

Although it may be well known that the Farnsworth is the premier destination for lovers of the Wyeth family's artistic legacy, the museum has a wide range of artists, styles, and influences in its collection. The Farnsworth also hosts great exhibits and art events, some of which are available for free to the community.

It is spread out to two buildings plus the homestead. So much to see. Loved seeing the sketches in one building and then finished watercolors in the next. It's affordable and worth the visit.

We visited as we were in the area for a family event and had free entry due to a reciprocal art membership, other wise this place might be a little expensive for what it is. That said, it did have a decent and varied collection of art, with a focus on Maine and there is a lovely garden with a small sculpture park and a further gallery across the street out the back in a old church. Enough to entertain younger kids, but realise it isn't geared towards little children too. The museum store is also very good. Plenty of on street parking around the place as well.
