Story

Florida Memorial University is a private coeducational four-year university in Miami Gardens, Florida. One of the 39 member institutions of the United Negro College Fund, it is a historically Black, Baptist-related institution which is ranked second in Florida and ninth in the United States for graduating African-American teachers.HistoryOne of the oldest academic centers in Florida, the university was founded in 1879 as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida. Soon after, the American Baptist Home Mission Society gave its full support and the first regular school year began in 1880. The Reverend J. L. A. Fish was its first president. Despite a promising start, racial tensions soon cast a shadow over the Institute. In April 1892, after unknown persons fired shots into one of the school’s buildings, then-President Rev. Matthew Gilbert and other staff members fled Live Oak for Jacksonville, where he founded the Florida Baptist Academy in the basement of Bethel Baptist Church. They began holding classes in May 1892, with Sarah Ann Blocker as the main instructor. The school in Live Oak, however, continued to operate even after this splintering.Nathan W. Collier, President of Florida Baptist Institute, and Sarah Ann Blocker, of Florida Baptist Academy, combined the two institutions to found Florida Normal and Technical Institute in 1896. Collier was president of the college from 1896-1941, and Blocker Dean of Women and Vice-President from 1896 to 1944. It was there that two brothers, James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson (faculty member), wrote the words and music to "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" (known as the "Negro National Anthem"), in 1900.

Their degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on. They pass them out like candy even to someone who not only never applied to college but couldn't even bother to attend high school. A thug stoner just gets a degree in aeronautical science based on the fact he liked to get high. Unbelievable!

HBCU!!!! Full of life and beautiful minds trying to set themselves up for a positive future. This school is not perfect and it has it's days; but if you ever are down, and feeling like you're overwhelmed, come to this school and see young black men and women investing into their future.

This is one of the worst colleges in the state of Florida don’t recommend anyone going here at all!!! They are very stereotypical of who they want in there college. This is not a place where you want to send anyone to unless you want them at another high school with rude and unprofessional staff members. This school is very unprofessional at their work let anyone with guns and other dangerous weapons. This is not a safe environment to go to school. In a last year there were shootings inside the campus of Florida Memorial University by students. Lack of protections anyone can come unto school campus without showing proof of ID. This school should be shut down

Terrible school!!!! Constant fighting, aweful dorms 😷 attended here my first semester and I will not be returning. Honestly I personally think that the school needs to get rid of a couple bad influential students and replace them with good ones that deserve and want to learn at such an establishment at Florida Memorial University... And rebuilt the schools brand and what it stands for.. Compared to other HBCUs this school has no school pride and it doesn’t want to make you feel like sharing to the world you attended there. Due to it being so small it definitely feels like high school, security isn’t doing their jobs, and administrators are very rude! DO BETTER for the NEXT Generation please FLOMO!! As a black student attending an HBCU we got to show the world that we are still worth attending and paying for to earn degrees.

This is the worst school ever do not attend here! It is like a high school more then a college, the school is in a really bad neighborhood (Miami Gardens) and it is overall a really ghetto school. Fighting is normal and no one gets kicked out for fighting, the security doesn't stop fights they watch them, the dorms are like the projects with 4 people to a room and no opposite sex visitors. Everyone is very judgemental, closed minded and seeks drama. It is not a good college experience & you should attend a better & safer university. This school sells you a dream that it doesn't live up to.
