We are an Australian couple on a driving tour of the west coast and have visited many galleries. Forest Gems ranks as one of the best with a great collection of artisan pieces but the best was the exotic timber they have for sale. On the day of our visit there was a quantity of quilted maple blocks - these were rejects by the Gibson Guitar people because of colour variations or slight imperfections - the quilting was the best we have seen including wood veneer. The gallery is behind the main street and can be missed if you dont look for it. We had a great chat with the owner who was very helpful. The shop has a ban on smart phones which was a breath of fresh air. Don't come inside and display your bad behaviour if you do not like that rule. To the woman complaining about being asked to remove her pram then all you have done is to demonstrate your ignorance - there is barely room for one person between the display cabinets.

What an awesome place!! From the moment we stepped through the doorway, we entered into what seemed like an art studio...I guess because it is!! The co-owner greeted us warmly and took time to explain the process of how pieces are carved, etc. Because of pride of ownersip, I completely undersood requests not to handle certain pieces. I also understood the meaning of no cell phone usage in the shop due to videos being shown to inform customers of the creation of their wooden treasures. I respected this request because some people are hearing impaired, such as myself, and consider it a matter of common courtesy to be considerate to others, which I suppose is not as "common" as in days past. It has become an "It's all about me" selfish world. The shop owner & I joked about the addiction to cell phones and how some people truly have a hard time putting them down for even a short time (including myself.) All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Staff was friendly and helpful. They offered to ship my treasures home for a very reasonable price and they will be waiting for me upon returning home. I would recommend visiting this place to all interested in the art of wood carving. It's a guaranteed delightful experience.

This guy is a "JERK"! I walked in the store to shop for some live wood shelving and was browsing around. My wife was meeting there and could find the shop so she called me on her way for dirrection. I answer my phone and was talking my wife giving her dirrections to this shop. The owner walks up to me interupts me and says "you need to take your call outside, this is a smart phone free shop , there is signs posted all over the place" Dude, I'm all for small owned business and I believe you have the right to run your shop the way you want but I was gettting ready to drop about $600 bucks in you're shop but instead I will take my business else wehere. You are more worried about people answering a call in your business than assisting them with there needs. You need to get out of retail!

My family and I came to Port Townsend for our Christmas purchases. First impression was an odd sign on the door saying "no smart phone zone". As soon as we walk in, we are not greeted like the rest of our wonderful Port Townsend experience. A woman came at us and told my sister she had to remain outside because she had a baby stroller. No "hello", no "welcome." Who tells someone to leave? For the record, my niece was asleep. We love Port Townsend but that woman was not a sales, not even a nice person at all. I hope their company finds a person who can be a better first impression.
