Some things just can't...or at the very least shouldn't...be ordered online. Musical instruments need to be experienced - touch, see, play, etc. While you may be able to get your hands on some instruments locally, it is very difficult to find stores that have upright basses in stock. Fretwell Bass is one such store and was well worth the 6+ hour drive from NJ to experience the store, it's collection of new and vintage basses, and the remarkable town and surrounding area of Staunton VA. While most of the basses are ready to play, they will change out or add anything you want to make it your own custom creation - strings and string action, bridge, pick-ups, etc. The owners/staff - Travis, his wife and daughter - are all accomplished musicians and skilled at set-ups and repairs.

Exceptionally friendly staff and fair prices. I took in a cello to be serviced, and Travis made adjustments to it and educated me on how my son can properly maintain all parts of the cello.

Bought an Englehardt from them a year ago. Great place, good selection of new and vintage basses set up a ready to go. They guarantee everything. Lotsa nice Kay basses. If you play bluegrass / rockabilly bass and are anywhere within a day's drive, this is the place to go. They have stuff not on the website, best to call ahead - talk to them about what you're looking for - they can make sure it's set up properly, and arrange a day. That way you don't have to make multiple trips.

Peerless selection of stand up bass instruments and service plus a lot of great guitars, mandolins, ukes... and a great place to jam! Friendly staff!

Recently had work done by Fretwell on my upright bass. The turn around time was very fast as I was only in town for the week. The repairs were fixed excellently. Those working there were very nice to work with and very knowledgeable. Definitely will drive back here from North Carolina if I need any more work done.
