In 1998, we joined with Virginia Commonwealth University and Valley Health Systems to open the Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency, where 15 licensed physicians-in-training prepare for board certification in Family Medicine under the instruction of our Attending Physicians.

Had an appointment for the afternoon of Tuesday March 20th. I took off work at 12:30pm, drove from NVA for 2:00pm appointment. Got to office and sign on the door "Closed due to inclement weather". Office had my home and cell number and no one bothered to call me to say they were closing. So much for being a new patient!!! Guess you don't want or need me or my wife as patients. Guess we have to find somewhere else to go. Gave 1 star as unable to post 0 stars. Funniest part is to date no one has attempted to reach out to me to re-schedule this appointment. Our business will go elsewhere.

The negative reviews of this place all seem to concentrate on three factors: inexperienced residency doctors, repeat appointments, and high costs. My family has used this practice for many years, and while all three of these things are occasionally an issue, they are small problems outweighed by other, better factors: 1) Inexperienced residency docs: look, this happens at every practice that includes "green" doctors (which is necessary sometimes, at least if you want future doctors to be, you know, good at doctoring). It's annoying, sure -- I've run into two doctors there that seemed to be following a med school playbook, and were unwilling or unable to deviate from it. But both times, those doctors called in their superiors to address any questions I had which they couldn't answer. I've only had one truly bad experience there; it was with a doctor none of the others liked, and who was let go soon after, with profuse apologies to me over the way he had acted. All told, between my four family members we've seen probably 30 different people over 15 years, including two regular doctors we request, and have only had the one truly bad experience. I'd say that's a pretty good record. 2) Repeat appointments: First of all, these negative reviewers are full of it -- you don't actually have to do all those follow-up appointments. It's perfectly fine to call and get results; I've done it many, many times. In fact you can just sign up for the online health portal and have every result you've ever had, including graphs and explanations and notes and everything, AND the ability to directly email the doctors you saw and ask questions -- again, something I've done many times. So you can ignore any and all reviews where the reviewer implies they were essentially forced to come in for their results. Chances are, they took the doctor's recommendation as a requirement, and simply didn't ask to do it another way. Beyond that, I didn't realize so many people wanted doctors who didn't care about their health, because that's what the repeat appointments are for -- making sure you have the opportunity to discuss your results. Doctors aren't psychic; they can't read your mind and they don't know what your needs or abilities are, unless you tell them. Sure, seeing a regular "family doctor" can mitigate that, but guess what? You can just choose a regular doctor here, and then request them whenever you need an appointment. 3) High cost: yes, this place is a bit more expensive than similar practices, and significantly more expensive than a walk-in clinic -- this is the reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five. I don't like that the costs vary so much by what insurance you have, and I don't like that follow-ups cost the same as base appointments. But then they have professionals on staff, and deal with far more than your case of the flu or that weird bump that appeared on your face. If all you want is a prescription for amoxicilllin, by all means don't waste your money or their time; go to a walk-in clinic. But if you want consistent care, maybe recognize that it's worth a little more for the expertise. And it's definitely not a "money making scheme". Or at least, if it is, it's in the same way that the entire medical establishment and insurance industry is. Of course the entire industry is broken, in every facet from med school costs to equipment costs to lab costs to billing. But that's medicine in America for you. Of course we all want it fixed, but hopefully we're all smart enough to know by now that the blame doesn't go on individual practices. So look: no doctor's office is perfect. But please understand, FRFP is excellent for repeat customers. One-stop shoppers, or people who are too mousy or dense to speak up about their needs, might want to stick to the walk-in clinics. But I happily recommend this practice to you, if you need regular appointments, friendly staff, and doctors who will listen to you and actually entertain your suggestions about your own health.

I have been to this facility twice. Both times were extremely underwhelming. I had an appointment on Friday the 23rd at 4:30. The women at the front desk were rude, and I waited for two hours for my appointment. I was given a prescription for antibiotics, but had to call the office three times to finally get the script to my pharmacy, and I just now got my medication, an entire week after my appointment. This facility is expensive, and horribly inefficient.

Friendly and efficient. Compared to other offices I’ve been to before moving here, the waits are very short and the doctors and NPs I’ve seen have been easy to talk to and helpful.
