Story

Founded in 1849, Gilbert & Cole was originally located on Marblehead Harbor. The business moved to the railroad tracks on Bessom Street in 1870. Coal, lumber, and building materials were delivered by railroad until 1959.

Today, Gilbert & Cole is still located on Bessom Street and continues to supply Marblehead and the North Shore with quality lumber, building materials, and hardware.

these guys are stellar. I think I know what I need but leverage their experience and talk through the design and come to a consensus together. they have great recommendations and know building, not just building materials, but also the application. I wouldn't go anywhere else to save a couple bucks.

You might think these guys deal only in lumber and hardware but do not be deluded; their advice and suggestions have been invaluable to me as an artist. They always come up with a solution to some artistic delimma I am having. They are the best! Sandra Winter

I was so surprised to see a bad review of Gilbert & Cole, I had to write my own review. I've gone here for several home improvement projects and was always shocked at how good the customer service was. They've taken the time to talk with me about the best materials to buy and educated me on the proper way to complete my projects. Each time, I've gotten better materials than I would have found at a big box store, at a really good price. I was just recently in there several times while rebuilding my deck and Brendan spent time each time I came in, addressing any questions I had and making sure I had the right materials. I can't recommend Gilbert & Cole enough. I've never had anything less than an excellent experience here.

I've been slowly DIY finishing my basement over the past months (OK, almost a year) and every time I walk out of the store or hang up the phone with Brendan or Bill I am more confident in the quality and timeliness of the project and typically surprised at the price, which often beats big orange. Ask them to show you around and take particular note of the stack of 2x4s - every one I've gotten from them (a few hundred total) is dead straight and defect free. Delivery and returns have been as easy as pie. I get quality goods, advice I couldn't get anywhere else, and a thank you for my business. Even if it was far away, I'd still use Gilbert and Cole for all of my building projects.

I've gone to Gilbert and Cole twice thinking I'd support my local Hardware Store instead of Home Depot. Both times they've treated me rudely acting as if I was bothering them by trying to buy their subpar plywood. I've seen them being generally unhelpful to other customers too. I won't go back there even though it's the closest hardware store/lumber yard to my house. The wood I bought at a big chain store was better and cheaper.
