Gillette Castle State Park

Story

Gillette Castle State Park straddles the towns of East Haddam and Lyme, Connecticut in the United States, sitting high above the Connecticut River. The castle was originally a private residence commissioned and designed by William Gillette, an American actor who is most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage.LocationThe park is located at 67 River Road in East Haddam and consists of the castle and its grounds. It receives 300,000 annual visitors. It reopened in 2002 after four years of restoration costing 11 million dollars. It now includes a museum, hiking trails, and a picnic area.History William Gillette's "castle", called Seventh Sister, was built between 1914 and 1919 on a 184acre tract at the top of the southernmost of a chain of hills known as the Seven Sisters. Gillette died having no children, and his will precluded the possession of his home by any "blithering sap-head who has no conception of where he is or with what surrounded". The State of Connecticut took over the property in 1943, renaming it Gillette Castle State Park. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.There are a number of oddities personally designed by Gillette, such as unusual doorknobs and locks, and a system of inconspicuous mirrors for surveillance of the public rooms from outside the master bedroom. One can see the Connecticut River from the castle's garden.

This is a very interesting "castle" and surrounding state park with beautiful grounds. William Gillette - and actor from the late 1800s and early 1900s built this "castle" - the tour of the home which is open mostlly in the summer months - is self guided. It is worth taking ones time to look at all the incredible hand carved woodwork - built in furniture - - designed by this eccentric genius. He was best known for his stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes - so fans of Sir Conrad Doyle will appreciate the recreation of 221 B Baker's Street room that Holmes and Watson did their pondering in - - I loved that Gillette built this room so that he could better study and be in his character. The grounds of the state park are great for hiking - and for picnics. Also - the riverboat experience on the Connecticut river - which also includes a stay at the State park - is a great way to see the Castle - -

This Castle is a gem of architectural history with the creative use of Connecticut Field Stone!! The views of the CT River are epic!!! The hiking trails around the castle are absolutely amazing with variable terrain and bridges. Check the open hours as the castle is closed in the winter.

Wonderful history of the castle and it's owner. Fabulous river views, with eagles almost year round. Excellent hiking on the old railroad bed Mr.Gillette had built. Plenty of picnic spots also. Below the castle is the Haddam ferry over to Essex.
