Glenn's Cafe

Story

From sometime around 1939 a small gas station diner on the side of what was then Highway 40 (today’s Business Loop) held the name Glenn’s Cafe. Originally opened by Glenn Purdy and his wife Tilley, it enjoyed a 40+ year run at that location, starting as little more than a diner but graduating to more substantial cooking, Glenn’s and it’s eponymous sign became a favorite of weary travelers and local families alike.

In the early 80′s the business, and sign, were purchased by Stephen Cupp and then moved in 1988 to downtown Columbia for the first time to the corner of 9th and Cherry Streets, in what is now the Kaldi’s Coffee building where it remained with an ever growing New Orleans’ influence.

Those with a good enough memory have long tried to forget the last Mardi Gras they spent there! In 2002 Glenn’s closed it’s doors and many thought they’d seen the last of the Columbia ledgend. A trip to the South side of Columbia and then to the Virgin Islands for Steve before being headhunted, out of the sunshine and back to Boonville, for another incarnation of Glenn’s inside the Hotel Fredeick begining in 2006 brings us almost up to date. In the summer of 2013 Steve made the move to become Food and Beverage director at The Tiger Hotel back in Columbia and brought with him the Glenn’s Cafe name and of course the beloved original sign.

If I could give the meal I had there today less than one star I would. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits for breakfast and thought there had been a mistake when it came out to me. I was basically served a bowl for what looked like white soup then after I went digging under the surface I found some flavorless BOILED shrimp. I am from the south, shrimp and grits is my favorite meal so I've had it many many times, but never NEVER have I ever been served such an atrocity to southern cooking. Boiled shrimp in Shrimp and Grits? Are you kidding me, they are always supposed to be blackened or at the very least seasoned and grilled, but boiled? Never. In addition to the grits being in soup formation they somehow still weren't fully cooked and i got hard pieces of grits stuck in my teeth! If this flavorless muck wasn't enough I had the audacity to order a poached egg on the side that no one bothered to drain because I was poured off about a table spoon of water from the dish. All of this being said I obviously only had one bite of my meal and gave up. The friend that I was with wouldn't let me complain but I thought that the waitress MUST notice that absolutely NOTHING had been eaten and ask me if she could fix it or at the very least have it taken off of my bill. Nope, not only is Glen's Cafe incapable of cooking "Southern Comfort Food" but they have apparently never encountered "Southern Hospitality" either. I paid a full charge for the worst meal of my life. Glen's Cafe was once good, but has gone down hill fast after getting a new GM and losing most of their staff including the best bartender this town has to offer. If you've liked this place in the past, trust me, there is little reason to like it anymore.

Decent food, probably could use some consistency. I've tried several things here, the Cobb was a winner and I especially appreciated avocado that wasn't killed with preservatives. I've had better gumbo in my life, and the chicken fried breading is usually too salty. Ask the staff about what to order, they'll be pretty good in guiding you.

Visited here this evening. Food was very good. Glen’s Margarita “No Good”! Very very loud. For the price of the food you would think it wouldn’t sound like a bar. Said something to the waiter and nothing was said about the noise. Won’t go back.!

Excellent service and nice venue. However, the blackened redfish was extremely dry and the wine pairing did not help.
