Story

The Grand Lake Theatre is a historic movie palace located at 3200 Grand Avenue and Lake Park Avenue in the Grand Lake neighborhood of Oakland, California.HistoryThe Grand Lake Theater, designed as a single auditorium theater by Architects Reid Brothers for local businessmen Abraham C. Karski and Louis Kaliski, held its grand opening on March 6, 1926. On August 1, 1929, Abraham C. Karski and Louis Kaliski leased the theater to West Coast Theatres, Inc. for a period of 94 years, 4 months until November 30, 2023. The theater is still owned by descendants of Abraham C. Karski and Louis Kaliski; and is still under the original lease terms although the lease has been assigned twice (to Mann Theaters Corporation of California (who later became National General Theaters, Inc.) in 1973 and to the current tenant Renaissance Rialto, Inc. in 1980.)After the Grand Lake Theater opened on March 6, 1926, it held vaudeville and silent movie showings, but with the arrival of "talkies" it began to exclusively show sound films. The original Wurlitzer Hope Jones Unified Orchestral Organ by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Co. of San Francisco still stands in the main auditorium. The original phone number for the theater was Glencourt 3100 and the original ticket prices were 40 cents for night and Sunday matinees in the orchestra and balcony, 50 cents for the loges, 25 cents for daily matinees, and 10 cents for children at any performance. The theater's exterior is surmounted by a giant illuminated rooftop sign which was originally furnished by Brumfield Electric Sign Co., Inc. Neoclassical faux columns and urns line the main interior space and the ceiling is adorned with a crystal chandelier in the lobby and classical frescos in the auditorium. The theater's interior artwork is considered to be Art Deco.

One of my favorite places in Oakland. Have seen numerous movies here and love the $5 Tuesdays deal and matinees as well. Staff is friendly and helpful. Inside is just beautiful. Old school charm with tasteful decor and interior design. It's like you are transported in a different era all together once you step foot inside. I've been to 3 different showrooms and they are pretty decent and chairs are comfortable enough. They show 2D and 3D movies here. Oh yea, and popcorn is always lovely and a must really :) Bathrooms are clean which is always a pleasant surprise! But most of all, it's a neighbourhood gem so got to love the Grand Lake Theater, so close and so conveniently located!!!

Beautiful theatre with great community offerings, movie selections, and prices. Sound and visual quality are as good as any modern theatre even though it feels like you have stepped back in time. It is always my go to theatre and one of my favorite places in the East Bay!

I grew up going to this gorgeous theatre. It is independently owned and often holds special progressive viewings or events. They are also progressive in their film selection, as well as showing the more mainstream ones. Love ya Grand Lake Theatre!

Grew up in the neighborhood surrounding the theater and I love it. The people that work here and the staff are always very friendly and just like family. They make it enjoyable every time my friends and I visit.

Best place in the SF Bay Area to see a movie. Great prices. Seniors pay $8. Gen am $10.50 even for 3D. Tuesdays (?) Cheaper. Lg drink only $4.75, LG popcorn $5.75. The Mighty Wurlitzer is played on Saturdays. 70 mm film projection like last night for Wonder Woman!!!. Double stacked digital projection for best 3D. when needed. Great Dolby (?) Sound too. Calibrated. This is because in part Pixar artists can have a place to show their films under the best conditions. Or so the rumor goes. Parking can be a bit rough Multiple got parking available under 580 and a lot half a block down Grand Avenue. Wonderfully lt up at night.
