I had a great experience with Great Smiles of La Mesa. Dr. Johnson and her staff made me feel welcome and communicated everything clearly and in advance so I understood exactly what needed to be done and how much it would cost.

**ZERO** STARS if possible! See detailed justification below. Note that ALMOST ALL POSITIVE REVIEWS (on Yelp) are probably FAKE according to the following analysis. Notice the trend of reviews. There are several detailed, specific bad reviews. There are few good reviews for many years (4 total in 2011 to 2014). Then, good reviews appear in "clumps": 2/13, 3/14, 3/27, 4/10, 4/13/2015, then NO POSITIVE REVIEWS until Sep 2016, then 9/8, 9/12, 9/16, 10/4, 10/7, 10/12, 10/17, 10/19, 10/21/2016. The 2016 reviews seem more genuine, but still smell fishy to me: All have specific names and are similar in length, style, and tone. ALL the 2015 good reviews are bland and non-specific and close to the same, shorter length. Sort them by time and you'll see. This is evidence of FAKE POSITIVE REVIEWS, which are a widespread and well-known problem on Yelp & other review sites. It seems the fake review writers did some research, then adjusted so as not to match well-known characteristics of fake review; in doing so, they still wrote very similar-sounding reviews. I'd be generous & give 2 stars (if possible) to average in my past good experiences, but (1) my recent negative experiences have been confirmed as a pattern by other reviews and (2) many good reviews match well-known features of fake positive reviews. Having had time to dwell on my experiences and consider the fake reviews that are artificially inflating Great Smiles's reputation, I would give ZERO STARS if possible. Many bad reviews (Yelp) match my experience thus: (1) Great Smiles pushed expensive services & (2) other patients reported inconsistencies with charges and application of insurance guidelines. For me, they initially did a great job with my required "perio" maintenance. Years later, however, (a) I realized that they charged inconsistently with Met Life guidelines (confirmed by a Met Life rep, and later acknowledged by the mgr, Dr. Johnson), (b) they never sought to resolve this with me and Met Life after I pointed it out to them. I eventually realized that they had also sold me many expensive procedures with high-percentage out-of-pocket expense; now, I realize they may not have been necessary, or alternate, less costly procedures could have been selected. Once they had me on the higher-cost perio maintenance cleanings, they never made any deliberate effort to get me off them, and back onto the low-cost or no-cost prophylaxis--or even to explain to me how we would work together toward that objective. Also, after I tried several times to ascertain the actual difference between the two types of cleanings, they never clearly explained to me, per ADA or other authoritative standard, what the difference was. The cleaning experience seemed the same to me. All they did was to assert that they were doing something different. When I politely detailed my experiences and concerns by e-mail (the receptionist did nothing to seek resolution or alert the manager), the manager (Dr. S. Johnson) got back to me after 15 days and said that, because of the "threat" in my e-mail (Dr. Johnson's word), she was no longer comfortable providing dental services. My "threat" was "I do not want to have to file a grievance with Met Life and detail negative experiences in Internet reviews for any incorrectly resolved issues." Is it not a patient's right to file a grievance with an insurance company, esp. after seeking resolution thru other means? Is it not appropriate for a customer to write a thoughtful review of a company, esp. after seeking to resolve difficulties? She didn't deny that my complaints were legitimate, but she didn't seek to address them, and they should have been easy to address, for any dental practice worthy of its customers. The AMAZING conclusion is this: Great Smiles would rather lose FOUR otherwise satisfied, faithful customers, who might be customers for a decade or more to come, rather than provide some explanations and assurances regarding dental care and pricing. This should be a HUGE RED FLAG for anyone considering this provider.

STAY AWAY STAY AWAY STAY AWAY!!!! OR PAY THROUGH THE NOSE! After my first visit here, I was excited because the dentist was very nice and I was going to be getting a 5 point bridge which would have been covered by my insurance at about of cost of 1,300 dollars. I was stunned when they gave me the first estimate at 6,000 for my share because they said insurance only covered one crown, not three. I called my insurance company and they said that was not true and that they never would have said that. In addition, other codes that the were going to bill for were incorrect and would not have been covered by my insurance. After speaking with the insurance company several times, and having to have them call the office and explain the correct codes to be using, I thought all was fine, and I could finally get started. Carla at the front desk was always nice and supportive so I can't blame her. But according to her, the office manager got tired of my insurance company calling so she decided that she did not want me as a client. The truth? They thought they could convince me that I was wrong on my coding and that by simply saying oh, your insurance doesn't cover that, that I would say "oh well, let's just go ahead then." They would have made over 6 thousand dollars instead of the $1200 that it worked out to when the correct codes were applied. So because of this, they pretty much said no thanks. If you go here, please be aware that this office will attempt to tell you that so and so is not covered by your insurance. Be smart, and check the codes for yourself - and call your insurance. I cannot imagine how many people this has already happened to. Whether it is 50 dollars or 4 thousand dollars, it does not matter, these are TERRIBLE MEDICAL PRACTICES. My insurance company called this week to tell me that they are launching an investigation into their procedures. STAY AWAY OR ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
