The good: This Family of ownership swooped in mid Pandemic and saved a community staple. Gus's has been around for a long time here and the old money and boomer generation was certainly happy to see it reopening after and uncertain Pandemic forced closure. The Bad: The Syrup was rationed as if Table Syrup is unbearably expensive, I ordered Strawberry Pancakes, and got Pancakes with Strawberries on them. I suppose there is no difference, however when I serve my family chocolate chip pancakes I mix them with the batter, so forgive me for thinking the same would happen with the Strawberries. I understand food cost has gone way up, but presentation was less than stellar, and rationing things like table Syrup really was disappointing. I asked for coffee and Orange Juice, my orange juice was from concentrate and came with a separate glass, and a bottle of Minute Maid Orange Juice. I'm confused, how is this saving them money? A Gallon of Store Brand Orange juice is a third the cost of a case of this concentrate stuff, name brand no less. I wont likely be returning here for breakfast, but they seem to have mastered fried food as we were here for dinner several months back and were not disappointed, which is why we figured we would give breakfast a try. I may seem harsh but I hope this is taken as constructive by ownership because as I said, I cant wait to see what they do next. They really have put Gus's back on the map here in Plattsburgh, and I heard they are considering a Drive In Theater, this would be BOMB...
Great diner location coming off the ferry . Place was clean and staffing very friendly and attentive. Food was real good diner food. Did hav grilled cheese and BLTs. Great choice. Would highly recommend this place and pricing was excellent for what you get. We paid less than $50 and had awesome food on the plate.
Stopped by for takeout on the way back from the Northway. Certainly convenient right off the exit. We got the special "Asian Salad" which was not very special nor very Asian, quite disappointing. The fish and chips were certainly fresh and delicious. Apparently local Perch was the catch of the day. Stick with the typical diner food and you'll be better off. Service was pleasant.
It's been well over 40 years since I've back to Gus' and the only thing that has changed is the decor. If you have never been here and are a meat eater, devour a Michigan. It can be messy and with onions I always get them buried. Try it out! Oh yeah, get the fries crispy... they're awesome.
The size of macaroni salad you get is really sad for the price. This stuff is not expensive to prepare, especially as it was very basic. The michigan was very good and lived up to the reputation.Food: 4/5
I’m staying in a local motel for the night as I make my way to Quebec and I asked the person that checked me in where she recommends that I grab some food. She said “Gus’s, it the best place around” so I took her advice. I wasn’t in the mood for a hotdog so I ordered a small veggie pizza to go and I requested a thin crust and I wanted it crispy. Well, I gotta say that they got it right. It was delicious. The next time I pass through the area I’ll try one of their chili dogs.
Delicious food, speedy and friendly service! Gluten free rolls available for burgers and sandwiches. Gus' famous michigan sauce for sale by the pound $12.95 per pound. A must visit for the Plattsburgh Area!
Just had lunch with an older friend with reduced mobility. Service by our waitress was refreshingly friendly, fast and professional - and the food was delicious. The homemade hamburger Mac soup is one of the best in town, and the sandwiches were made with high quality meats and very fresh lettuce/tomatoes. Great selection of desserts, too. This was my first time coming back since the change in ownership and I am so glad I did! Will be back soon for sure - this has become a little gem of a diner!
Typical diner, friendly staff, prompt service, decent selection of food options. My only con about this visit was that I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich which was excellent but it didn't come with anything else on the plate. The sandwich was $4.99 and if I wanted to add chips and a pickle, it would cost $2 more. Usually the little sides are included on the price of the sandwich.
I lived about a mile away from this location from 1977 to 1981. Probably had Michigan's at least once a week from there. I revisited about 20 years ago, making the 13 hour round trip just for some Michigan's. Without a doubt the best in north country. Visited again about 10 years ago and also The taste was the same it was basically made from beans and not meat. I happen to look at their website about a year or so ago and found they were permanently closed. After a sufficient period of morning I moved on with my life, but not easily. I happen to be headed north touring the Canadian maritimes and on my way back stayed just a block or two away. Imagine my jubilant surprise when I saw the lights on! Stopped in for a couple of Michigan's, which are now back to meet based with the same amazing taste. I was lucky enough to meet the new owner and told her I'd be in for breakfast about 7:00 a.m. . She mentioned they had great breakfast and I said no, I'll be having Michigan's again. My favorite hot dog place in the world, and I've been around it. So happy they're reopened and back to their glory! Congratulations and the best of luck in your continued success!
