My visit to Hakurakuso was an absolute delight! The warm hospitality and the menu offered a variety of mouthwatering options, each dish surpassing my expectations. Their signature sushi was a standout, bursting with divine flavors and textures. And let me tell you, the touch of truffles in some dishes was one of my favorites! What's even better is that the prices were reasonable, considering the top-notch food and overall experience. Dining at Hakurakuso felt like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with each delicious dish whisking me away to a blissful place. I can't wait to return and indulge in more of their delectable offerings. And oh, let's not forget about their desserts! They were beautifully hand-made and tasted heavenly and velvety. Be sure to save room for these sweet treasures, they're truly worth it!
I love kaiseki, and I especially love THIS kaiseki! There wasn't a single bite that I didn't like and we were SO full at the end - they definitely didn't skimp on the portions. Food: Everything was tasty, my favorites were probably the lobster, cod, seasonal assortment, and weirdly the pine nut soup. The only thing I wasn't a HUGE fan of was the dessert - it was still good, just nothing mindblowing and also was stuffed at this point. I wouldn't say that any of the courses were overly creative, but they were all very high quality, comforting dishes made with love. Cost: About $200pp for 11 courses Service: Really great, almost TOO attentive. Always had our water cups full and the courses were well paced. Ambiance: Beautifully decorated, romantic lighting but not too dim, great for dates or celebratory dinners. Has tables that can accommodate larger groups. Presentation: Each dish was beautiful and plated with care, I loved the surprise of seeing each new plate come out. Definitely recommend this new restaurant - come before they're too crowded : They take reservations and walk-ins.
If you are a fan of Japanese cuisine, you should definitely try Hakurakuso, a newly opened restaurant in Midtown East. Hakurakuso means "a place filled with 100 kinds of joy" and that's exactly what you will experience when you dine there. Hakurakuso specializes in kaiseki, a traditional Japanese multi-course dinner that showcases seasonal ingredients and artistic presentation. The quality and freshness of the food at Hakurakuso is impeccable. The ingredients are locally sourced and organic, and the dishes are prepared with care and skill by the chef. The flavors are rich, and the plating is beautiful and elegant. The service at Hakurakuso is also outstanding. The staff are friendly and attentive, and they make sure that you have a pleasant dining experience. They are happy to answer any questions you have about the menu or the kaiseki courses.
Had kaiseke menu with friend. For context, have tried many restaurants at similar prices throughout the world, many of which from New York. Food: Several issues with food. Cod was very hard/chewy. Flavors were random and did not pair well with each subsequent dish. Lobster was not well prepared and appeared to have been over cooked to the point of being inedible. Scallops were very sandy. Food was served cold in many instances more on that later. Service: Unprofessional and in some cases- outright offensive! First noticed that food was being brought out to us at a set increment regardless of our pacing. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time, so it’s not like it was hard to keep an eye on us. This started to become a problem midway through when we had 2-3 different dishes on our table at the same time… not good for “fresh food” when it’s just sitting out. The most damage this caused was with the wagyu. The staff realized we had so much food on our table so they started placing it somewhere out of sight instead, but the results were the same. The wagyu was brought to us completely cold, which is a huge problem due to the fact it is a very fatty meat, so instead of melting in your mouth it instead tasted like eating cold butter! Considering the price of wagyu, this is just outright negligent!! This might have been a two star review, but when my friend asked the waiter about it, he said we eat at a slow pace and that’s why!? As if that’s an excuse? They also told us that there was nothing they could do about it when we complained, and when we asked to speak with the chef, they told us the chef had already left. Very unlike similarly priced restaurants to say the least. Ambiance: Music was fine, bit loud but I think that’s a preference thing. If you like gold, you’ll love the interior, dishes, and flatware. When we visited there were very few people so it was hard to tell how lively it would normally be.
A promising, if pricy, new restaurant sporting fine Japanese fare. Despite only two parties dining in, turnaround on food was noticeably slow. Thankfully every item I tried was delicious. Looking forward to revisiting Hakurakuso once it gets better footing on service.Service: 4/5
What went well: The staff was highly professional, kind, and incredibly helpful. Upon arrival, we were provided the food and beverage menus, with only wine selections listed as drink options. We asked whether sake was available and the team graciously comped us a carafe of house sake to make up for the lack of a sake list. When our appetizer options were not available due to the current kitchen situation, they again comped us alternative appetizers. Overall, our interactions with the staff were quite pleasant and are the primary reason to award two stars as opposed to one. The restaurant itself was also well-decorated and chic. What needs improving: The food. Constructive criticism listed below from most to least important. 1. We ordered sukiyaki for three people, and what we received was not sukiyaki. The bowls laid in front of us could be best described as nikujaga Japanese meat and potato soup without the jaga potatoes. The dish bore no resemblance to sukiyaki whatsoever. We were very disappointed knowing good wagyu had gone into the dish. If Hakurakuso wants to charge over one hundred dollars for a serving of sukiyaki, here is what they must do in order to avoid disappointment: - Realize sukiyaki is not a stew or soup. When cooked properly it should have a thick sauce resulting from reduction of sparing amounts of warishita in a very hot pan. - Serve sukiyaki cooked at the table with a portable burner induction or gas. By cooking themselves, guests can enjoy wagyu hot and cooked to preference instead of lukewarm and overcooked. Cooking at the table also helps achieve the desired sauce consistency mentioned above. - Include raw egg for dipping the meat immediately after it cooks in the hot pan. - Include many more vegetables, preferably at the table for cooking on demand. Our bowls only had small amounts of cabbage included, and sukiyaki is supposed to be a vegetable-heavy affair. - Provide bowls of rice with the sukiyaki. Sukiyaki is not enjoyable without rice due to the intense flavor of the sauce. 2. We ordered rice after receiving our sukiyaki-like dish without rice. The bowls of rice were dry and tasted like frozen rice had been reheated in the microwave. 3. The house sake we were served was room temperature. It would have been much more enjoyable if chilled or heated. It would also be good if Hakurakuso could offer more than just a limited wine selection; it would be nice to have various sake, shochu, and Japanese beers available at a minimum, if not a full bar.
Authentic flavors and a fantastic presentation. Sublime combinations good for both the eye and the sense of taste. An undiscovered gem - it seems, should have been fully booked in my opinion. Much recommended!Food: 5/5
It promises an exquisite culinary journey filled with delectable delights, leaving guests with a memorable and joyful experience. Tonight, we are truly relishing this wonderful and joyous evening!Food: 5/5
Really unfortunate dining experience — food came either cold and overcooked, some of the food for 2-3 courses later was clearly sitting in the back kitchen… leading to seaweed not being crispy, wagyu being cold, etc. — not much of anything came at the appropriate temperature. Spoke to the waiter and we were somewhat blamed for eating slower than expected… was wanting to give a new location a chance but would recommend sticking with more tried and true restaurants.
Excellent restaurant. We had the Kaiseki Course and the it was definitely worth it. The presentation, the food, the atmosphere were all amazing. The service was top notch. Every dish was a delight. Go here for a night out and experience!Food: 5/5
