Hard Times Cafe

Story

Hard Times Cafe is a collectively owned restaurant in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is known for its punk and hippie ideology, its gritty ambiance, and its large selection of vegan and vegetarian food. It is open 22 hours a day, closing only between the hours of 4 am and 6 am.HistoryHard Times was founded as a 24-hour cafe in 1992 by eight employees of The Urban Peasant, a failing restaurant at that location. Working with the vision of a place where all kinds of people could come together to drink coffee and eat vegetarian food, they transformed the restaurant into what is now Hard Times. The location is a staple of the West Bank neighborhood, and a popular gathering place for local artists, musicians, students, and political activists.Minneapolis Second Ward City Council Member Cam Gordon holds open office hours in the cafe on the first Tuesday morning of each month.Hard Times faced closing in January 2000, when several arrests were made as a result of a drug sting at the cafe. The owners closed its doors voluntarily in the aftermath, but faced problems with the city when attempting to reopen. The owners met all of the health and fire codes necessary to reopen, but refused to sign a contract obligating them to close at 2 am and hire a licensed security guard. A compromise was eventually made, with Hard Times closing its doors for two hours each night.

I cannot emphasize how much I love Hard Times. The atmosphere is dark, grimy, and punk-rock. I love it. Their food is also delicious. In addition to being delicious, it’s also super affordable. You get huge portions, and a lot of their menu is under $10! It’s also nice knowing that they’re pretty much open all day and all night (with the exception of 4am-6am). And if you’re vegan or vegetarian, their menu was made for you! Also note that it is cash only! I’ve forgotten a few times.

Hard Times is a Minneapolis landmark. It is been a container for some of the most eclectic and artistic minds of the Twin Cities for as long as I can remember. The coffee is respectable as hell, and they offer a menu of surprisingly sophisticated Foods. The vibe is a middle finger To the corporate aesthetic that has become the norm these days. You can’t truly say that you’ve been to Minneapolis if you’ve never been to Hard Times.

The food was okay, if a little unseasoned - nothing that couldn't be fixed. The coffee and tea were alright too. Most other customers seemed to be students - which is great if you're a student or want to be around a younger/ similar aged crowd, but might not be what some people prefer. The prices were super reasonable and I feel that's my favourite part. Just be warned that they only accept cash! It was a good thing I had some on me - credit cards are a no go. The only reason I'm giving them a four star rating is because somehow I felt like the ambience and the atmosphere looked very manufactured. There was this feeling like they were trying too hard to be cool and 'hipster'y which just seemed a little odd. Overall - the food, drinks and the $$$ were fabulous though!

Great cheap vegan/vegetarian place. Almost always open and the food is pretty good considering the cost. Definitely has a punk theme going on so if you're looking for a place with frills go somewhere else. Great for college students.

You know, Hardtimes is great. Sometimes staff are not so polite but food is really good and it's the perfect place for chilling at 3am with friends or a laptop. Definitely not for everyone. Punk environment. I love it.
