Story

They're beautiful, fun to find and the whole family can mine for them at the Herkimer Diamond Mines, part of this KOA Resort. Actually quartz crystals, the stones were faceted by nature half a billion years ago. Here, experience Upstate New York's largest jewelry store, museum, a fossil-and-gemstone sluicing area and an activity center. Stay in themed cottages and lodges (tree-house, solar-powered, astronomy, robotics and more!). Dine at Miners' Table, a wood-fired pizzeria and chophouse. Alongside KOA's campsites, the West Canada Creek offers trout and fun for canoeists, tubers and kayakers. During your visit, enjoy a canal boat ride with Lil' Diamond III at the Herkimer Marina. Go through a lock that lifts you up and down 20 feet on the Erie Canal. Cherish your heroes at Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame. Join in the many activities during Herkimer Diamond Mines' 62nd anniversary.Pool: Memorial Weekend - Labor Day Weekend. Max pull thru: 100 feet.

Here you will hit rocks with a hammer. Keep in mind that these are Herkimer Diamonds so research the difference. The main office staff was pleasant. Price is $12 Adult. Goggles and buckets cost extra. Cafe serves meals but are very skimpy. Burgers do not come with lettuce, tomatoes or onions. Just a plain burger or one with cheese. First time here and I think we'll probably pass on a second.

There's only 7 KOA resorts and this one was amazing. Depending on what you want to do, there literally is something for everyone. We tent camped in a deluxe site and it was right along the Canada river and the rushing water was quite tranquil. There's a playground, basketball court, 2 shower houses, unique cabins, one even had a telescope. The staff are nice and friendly and helped us with any problems we had. The diamond mine and restaurant are right across the street within easy walking distance. I loved this place. We are already planning a return visit.

This was our first stay at any KOA and we couldn’t have been more pleased with our stay. Definitely a 5-star resort! There was never a shortage of yellow shirts to give us a hand when we needed it. Everyone was genuinely pleasant and I felt they all loved their jobs. There was plenty to do on the campsite for kids and adults alike. Quiet time was just that – quiet. The restaurant indeed had the best wood fired pizza we’ve had in a long time, as was promised by more than one worker who recommended it. The mining experience was also wonderful -- well organized and reasonably priced. It was a great place to spend the Memorial Day weekend and we’ve already started planning for a week there so we can bring more camping friends.

Go to the Ace of Diamonds mine and campground. The Herkimer Diamonds are very clear at either place. However, $50 a site vs $20 is simple math. The Ace is primitive camping. If you're interested in family and more activities then KOA is the place. Located on the river, a pool and clean. If you want the best Herkimer Diamonds EVER visit the Ace of Diamond mine.
