Regarding the review below, drivers are the ones required to carry liability coverage, whether your own or theirs. I've used Hertz twice this year and not had to show it but you do sign stating your responsibility for coverage. I've found my experiences to be pretty smooth and seamless. I'll be using them again in September. I've used other companies that have required seeing proof of insurance. It's not unreasonable and why wouldn't you have your insurance card with you? I keep a PDF copy of mine for just in case.

When I arrived at the rental counter the clerk said I also needed my auto insurance proof of insurance. She tried to claim that by law I needed auto insurance to drive the car. I explained to this is not true- that Hertz by law must carry liability insurance as the owner of the automobile. I told her that my credit card (Visa) would cover the collision. She said I needed to have full coverage and written proof of it. Of course, this is not true. She said it was a new policy the general manager of Hertz implemented 2 months ago. She quickly suggested I buy the insurance from Hertz, which I declined and walked away. My father rented from Hertz in AZ the same week as my reservation and did not run into this problem. Fortunately I had other options. If I was traveling and needed to have that car I would have been arguing with their customer service line for who knows how long
