The Most Unique Historic and Shopping Destination in Maryland! Discover Historic Savage Mill...Where You Can Play, Shop, Eat, and Relax!

Story

In 1820, Amos Williams and his three brothers borrowed $20,000.00 from their friend John Savage to start a textile weaving business on the banks of the little Patuxent River. The water from the River flowed over a huge 30 foot water wheel which powered the machines that wove the cloth. They named this business Savage Mill from 1822 to 1947.

The primary product woven in the 1800's was canvas. This lightweight, yet strong material was used in making sails for clipper ships that sailed in and out of Baltimore Harbor. This product was also used for tents, cannon covers and other supplies for Civil War armies; painted backdrops for Hollywood’s first silent movies from 1890 to 1900; and canvas cots, truck covers and transport bags used by U.S. soldiers in Europe during both World Wars I and II.

Between 1947 and 1950, the entire Mill was turned into a Christmas display village. Christmas tree ornaments were manufactured and a miniature B&O Railroad train transported visitors to an from the Route 1 parking area. There was also a one ring circus in the huge new weave Room.

The Winer family bought the mill in 1950. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Historic Complex of buildings with over 175,000 square feet is now home to major collector quality antique centers, home furnishing galleries, artist studios, specialty shops, craft boutiques, outdoor adventures, auctions, destination restaurants and wedding facilities.

Historic Savage Mill is truly a great unique shopping, dining, facility with even more than you’d first guess that meets the interests of the entire family. So what are you waiting for? Visit Historic Savage Mill today! We promise you’ll find something fun to do for everyone in your family!

This had always been one of my favorite malls. It is a more expensive mall with fewer shops than most. But the shops that are there are unique and the atmosphere is great. If you like browsing antiques and collectibles this is the place for you. And the staff of The Family Game Store are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They recently in the last 2 years opened a grill cheese place and sweet shop which is a great place to grab a quick bite. And Bounaparte bread has excellent customer service.

Always a fan of "brownfield projects" that repurpose or revitalize old buildings, this old mill deserved the care given it and the lovely shops and restaurants that give it new life. Reliable restaurants, interesting shops... it will easily consume a few hours of your day.

I love the feel and style of Savage Mill. It is a converted mill that houses some specialty stores and artist studios. It is a great place to go on weekend and explore. There are also trails to walk along and so many photo opportunities. I have seen people go there just for wedding or prom photos. There is a small cafe and bakery, a huge antique store, a family run game store, a stamping and scrapbooking and paper arts store to name my favorites.

Lots of cool boutique stores and antiques. Ram's Head and Sweet Cascades Choclotier/Say Cheese Grille are awesome. There's also a high ropes course and giant swing that goes out over the river. Neat!

There is a sandwich place, candy store, clock store, several odds and ends stores, gift shops, game stop, antique shops, several wonmen's clothing stores, bakery, restraint, etc. It is built in an old riverside mill building. Really a lovely, quiet place. There are several empty shops. This is mainly a weekend and holiday area.
