One of my favorite hot springs to go to. It's a little out there if you wanted to just stay in the Denver metro area, but worth the drive. I've been in the winter and the summer, the winter is my preferred time to go, less people and I can get into the hotter baths easier. The summer was very nice though. The wildlife was around and beautiful scenery. There were a little more people there and I went in a weekday, but still enough privacy to enjoy the baths by yourself/with company. I've also had a massage there in the winter. I enjoyed the baths before and after and it was a great experience. Definitely drink lots of water before and after. The only problem I had was the way that a situation was handled while we were there. Someone brought their dog and left it in their car during the summer, window cracked and sitting directly in the sun. We informed them about it because we had seen the lady walk her dog and then put it back in the car when we arrived. We assumed that they would notify her and/or let the police know about it so it could be handled properly. When we left several hours later, she was still there in the baths and her car was only moved to a little more shady of an area. Mind you it was 90+ degrees that day.

The hot springs are fantastically relaxing. We had a blast after dark in fall when the air was a balmy 38° hopping in and out of the 24 different spas. The spas range from a couple in the 90° area to a few that are 110° plus. The hotel room was definitely dated and small but it was clean and accommodating. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

The first person who helped us was friendly enough, though not particularly detailed - I can hear them rolling their eyes upon reading my comment, suggesting something to the effect of "What should I have been detailed about?" The water, mostly. I ended up googling it after the fact and learning more, quelling any of my concerns and issues. I would warn any visitor that the water is unfiltered to retain the minerals - but this also can leave other floaters. Regardless, the place otherwise was fine. We used a private room only. The entire place seemed clean and well kept. I guess I was just a little let down after taking a beautiful two hour drive to this. Take it for what it's worth.

Hot sulphur springs is a nice place to spend a relaxing afternoon, if you don't mind a bit of algae in your tub! Our group was lucky enough to land when the attendance was low, which is fortunate because several of the hottest pools are only big enough for two very close friends. Also, this is a natural sulfur spring, and while the pools are man-made and fairly well maintained the smell of hot sulfur dominates they place. If you are sensitive to strong unpleasant smells, you might want to bring some nose plugs and wait to remove them until after you shower.

Because it is located in such a remote location near the headwaters of the Colorado River the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort is unique but starting to show its age. Some of this aging can be expected from a resort that has been in operation for over 140 years. What this visitor noticed was that even though it is located in a rural location parking can be an issue when the place gets busy. The pool was closed when we visited but the adjacent duck pond was more than noticeable with green slime covering the entire body of water. Later we observed a river otter swimming in the duck pond. The facility itself is a maze of different temperature rated pools located on various tiers of the slope the resort is built upon. These pools vary from warm near mud holes containing brackish water with floating organic material to a clear, hot grotto with a smelly waterfall that seemed to attract the most people. Legend claims that the water contains magnesium and sulphur that are supposed to somehow be therapeutic for the human body. I suspect the heat of the water does more good than anything. The fact is, the water smells bad and has more the aroma of raw sewage than anything else. The water is taking a toll on the old building and it is starting to look like it smells. Young female clerical staff at the resort were less than enthusiastic or helpful. Make sure you bring your own towels, robes and water socks. The resort has these things but they will charge you extra for them. Some of flooring in some of the pools is absolutely painful to walk upon barefoot. Water socks or some kind of foot protection is absolutely required. Also required is sunscreen. The resort is located at high altitude and the risk of quick sunburn is quite real. The day we were there we observed a snake drop out of tree on the ridge above. A short time later a snake was observed crawling through the pool areas. After soaking in smelly water for four hours I can't observe any improvement in my overall health. I made a point to wash the smell off me as soon as possible.
