UPDATE BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM OWNER: In response to your question, requiring any amount of money in order to simply know your rates is, in my opinion, unreasonable. I would like to try the "steak" of your business, but I'm not setting foot in a restaurant that's going to charge me $40 just to see the prices on their menu. I've spent thousands in plumbing services in the past few months alone, but in each case there was no fee for the plumber to provide the rates for the work they recommended. If I'm calling a plumber, it's because I know there's a situation that I want to have addressed; it's only a matter of deciding which plumbing service to use - there shouldn't be that many cases where a client decides to just ignore a plumbing problem once they already have a plumber assessing it and present to complete the repair. If you do quality work and your prices are reasonable for the service you provide, it's really suspicious that so many customers decline to proceed with the fix once you're on site to the point that you'd even consider a mandatory charging policy for cases where they don't. Anyway, I'm not in any position to tell you how to run your business, but if you'd like to know how it comes across to new clients, there it is. I'm going to want a toilet replaced in the next few weeks, but a lot of your competitors will tell you their prices upfront, so at present you're not even an option. If you change your policy, I'd be happy to reconsider. Best of luck to you, too. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I was impressed by their stellar reviews, but I strongly disapprove of their policy of not providing anything in terms of their rates and then charging $40 for their estimate even if you don't choose to proceed. They should either provide general hourly rates, minimum hour charges, etc. in advance with paid estimates for atypical/complex jobs, or, if they feel that every situation is unique, they could go the Mr. Rooter route and provide free estimates (if their rates are reasonable, then this wouldn't impact their profits anyway). The policy of requiring payment just to know what they charge is extremely suspicious and suggests that they aren't competitively priced. I gave them 2 stars because at least they're upfront about it, but it's a huge red flag for me.

Jonathan came to replace a toilet and install a bidet faucet attachment. Very professional and courteous. Explained everything we needed to know and pointed out things we didn't know about. Clean and tidy work; price was equal to original estimate. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend "John the Plumber". Jonathan arrived on time and was personable and professional. After a brief assessment, he clearly explained the repair options. Not only was my plumbing situation effectively resolved, but I felt most comfortable, having been totally involved in the process. Not surprising that this company's ratings are so exceptional !

We called John the Plumber when our kitchen drain was blocked. Jonathan provided great service, and was friendly and professional. He returned a day later when we continued to experience a problem with the drain and fixed it again for us. Based on this excellent service we would use John the Plumber again.
