Kansas City Music Hall

Story

Municipal Auditorium is a multi-purpose facility located in Kansas City, Missouri. It opened in 1936 and features Streamline Moderne and Art Deco architecture and architectural details.BackgroundMunicipal Auditorium was the first building built as part of the "Ten-Year Plan", a bond program that passed by a 4 to 1 margin in 1931. The campaign was run by the Civic Improvement Committee chaired by Conrad H. Mann. Other buildings in the plan included the Kansas City City Hall and the Kansas City branch of the Jackson County Courthouse. The plan was championed by most local politicians including Thomas Pendergast and provided Pendergast with many patronage opportunities during the Great Depression.Municipal Auditorium replaced Convention Hall which was directly across the street and was torn down for parking in what is now called the Barney Allis Plaza. The streamline moderne architecture was designed by the lead architectural firm of Alonzo H. Gentry, Voskamp & Neville. Gentry later completed the design of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum after the death of the original architect, Edward F. Neild. Homer F. Neville was the lead designer for Municipal Auditorium.Hoit, Price & Barnes, the associated architects were responsible for the design of the mechanical work (HVAC, electrical, plumbing). William L. Cassell directed that design effort. Cassell went on to start his own firm in 1933 which is still in business as W. L. Cassell & Associates, Inc.

A beautiful historic building, and a great place to watch shows and concerts! The setup is such that all seats have a great view. It could use more/larger bathrooms, but considering the age of the building there are more than expected. There is close parking available, which is also very nice when attending shows in the cold winter months, or during the rainy spring season!

Loved it! It's fun to see shows there. Every seat is great and the acoustics are perfect.... just plan on walking a lot due to construction on local streets.

Gorgeous art deco building in the heart of downtown Kansas City. Built in the 1930s it has maintained it's art deco charm and is a truly gorgeous venue. For the audience the seats are surprisingly comfortable, with plenty of space. Sightlines are good as are acoustics. The only real negatives are parking (next door has a garage) and the bathrooms which are very dated and very small.

Seen Les Miserables last time. Horrible sound system. Too loud. Couldn’t under one tenth of the lyrics. Actually politely complained via e-mail back then. Got a free tickets offer for something else. Yah, like I wanted to go back for more abuse just because it was free. Called the hall today and asked if there were any guarantees this time. Nada. Why do they bring a show like Les Miserable to this turd when they have a Kaufman Center

Great venue, I liked the seating arrangements for an old theatre. It could be updated with more arm space.
