Knight Library

Story

Knight Library is the main facility of the University of Oregon's (UO) library system. It is located on the university's campus in Eugene, Oregon, United States. The library design is emblematic of the architecture of the university's older buildings, and it serves as a hub of student activity. As of 2008 it has a collection of more than 3 million volumes. The library also holds collections of primary sources such as photographs and manuscripts on various topics at the Special Collections & University Archives. It is also a depository for the Federal Depository Library Program.Construction and historyThe building was opened in 1937 to replace the original library building, which the University's collections had outgrown. Construction of the library was financed as a Depression-era Works Progress Administration project, spearheaded by Oregon senator Frederick Steiwer and took more than two years to complete. "The New Libe" as the Oregon Daily Emerald student newspaper had christened the building, was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence of the Oregon-based architectural firm Lawrence, Holford, and Allyn. Lawrence was also a driving force in much of the core architecture of the UO campus and was the first Dean of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts. The rich architecture of the building reflects an Art Deco aesthetic with "modernized Lombardy and Greco-Roman" elements as well as many integrated artistic embellishments including "the fifteen stone heads by Edna Dunberg and Louise Utter Pritchard, ornamental memorial gates by O. B. Dawson, carved wooden panels by Arthur Clough, and two large murals painted by Albert and Arthur Runquist."

Wonderful library on campus for students, faculty and staff. Alumni can use it too. Great architecture inside and out. Out front there are lots of great quotes to inspire.
Awesome resource, quiet areas everywhere so it's easy to find a private corner.
Any Oregon citizen can get a card here for free. It's HUGE. They have a fantastic map room, old books, new books, and all sorts of cool stuff. Go check it out.
Great place to study and relax. The atmosphere is calming and there are so many hidden nooks and crannies where one can hide away with some books. I’m not sure if it’s open during covid but I’ve spent many an hour either at a desk, sitting by a big window, or in one of their study rooms. Love the Knight Library!
The main library of the UO campus, it's got everything a student could need- good searing, large windows, and lots of books!
America has such ugly libraries. Third world country
When it comes to books, this is the best library in the state of Oregon. There's always helpful staff available to answer any questions. There's always a quiet corner to study those more difficult subjects. There's freshly brewed coffee at the cafe in the basement. And, it's open very late. 5 stars.
Staff is always friendly and so willing to help
4.6/5 Four floors to study on. Plenty of tables, bathrooms, extremely quiet on the upper floors. Eugene Library is good but this is a step above for anyone trying to study.
Nice quiet place to study, and to force your self to study. Many computers are available for students. Individual rooms and group study rooms.
