Been coming to this place for years. I moved away, and this is my very first spot I hit when I come into town. I think they have the best carnitas I’ve ever had! The salsa is incredible as well. I love dipping the carnitas into the salsa.Food: 5/5
It's a tiny place and in a very small old strip mall. Their service sucks most of the time. They know their tamales are very good and treat customers with a, "if you don't like our service, than don't come back, we're so popular and have so much business, we don't need you." There is nothing warm and inviting about their service. You just go there to buy the good food and then run out. Their tamales are great for a day but don't bother freezing or saving them for the next day. The tamales lose their freshness right away. Eat them while they are fresh and hot. You have to get there early to buy their tamales because by 9 am, they are sold out. I have to get there by 7:15 am to make sure I get the tamales I want. When they sell out that's it. They have very good Mexican breads. Parking: Good luck. Very small parking lot. It's next to a large laundry mat that is always busy and the parking is always filled. Kid-friendliness: No Wheelchair accessibility: No, it's too small. Again, they don't care if you fit or have easy access. They make so much money they don't care if you come in or not. They have enough business.
I used to enjoy their tamales, but it's not the same. Red beef and pork were my go-to tamales, but masa has no flavor, and meat is dry. There is always a long line, and it's just not worth the wait anymore.
Aggravating. There were only two customers when I arrived. The girl at the counter was Aggravatingly slow. Then finally another lady came from the back and both were slow! This place was recommended to me by two neighbors for their tamales. I won't be back. The sweet bread had a strange taste and the tamales were small and over spicy. They weren't anything special. I've had much better tamales elsewhere. I don't recommend them. Parking: The parking lot is small and shared by other businesses. Spaces are small and tight.
La Moderna Bakery has been my go-to place for chilli-cheese tamales for over 40 years. They had an outstanding vegetable tamale for a while but no longer. It makes my mouth water just thinking how delicious it was. They forgot how to wrap a tamale you used to be able to fold the husk back and eat it while walking. Now the husk is inconveniently folded inside the ingredients so you need a plate. and sometimes they are not thoroughly cooked good for freezing, but the taste is consistently good. Periodically I would buy a delicious cooked calves head. The baked goods are reliably tasty. I have my favorites. The employees are always pleasant and welcoming. Even after a very long day. Sometimes the lines are long but they do accept phone orders. I highly recommend La Moderna Bakery for savory and sweet! Parking: This store is in a small strip mall off Washington Blvd so parking is limited. It is worth waiting for a space.
I hear complaints that they are not friendly here but I think they're ok. Plus I really like buying carnitas by the pound. They're really good!! It comes with some salsa. They have good refried beans. I also like the red pork, the green pork, the green chicken and the cheese tamales! As fir their pan dulce, sometimes, it's not as fresh as I want it. So I usually don't get it here.
I was so enthusiastic to visit this place with the reviews I read and the hype of the 4.5 stars given to this established. So many reviews stated that the tamales had a generous portion of meat, which is not true. I was so disappointed when I tasted the green chile tamale. Every piece of corn husk you unwrap has a separate layer of masa. So, once you finish unwrapping it, you will find a very small tamale with a thin layer of chicken if you're lucky. I didn't think to take pictures at the time. But, if you look at RUDY SALAS review that has a picture of the green chile tamale. Pay attention to the size of the tamale, comparing it to the size of the fork. It's very small. I also ordered a large raspado de tamarindo. It was a generous portion and it looked so appetizing at plane view. Unfortunately, it was an overload of sugar which overpowered the tamarind in it. I also tried the Mexican bread and it was average at best. I do recommend the bolillos!! They were warm, very good right out of the oven. I also liked the homemade salsa of all things. It was good and not spicy. Perfect for chips! Mind you, I'm a hard core Mexican that knows how to make tamales and have had many great tasting raspados and Mexican bread elsewhere. They definitely make fresh tamales daily and run out. I assume it's because they don't make big batches. This place was just not for me. It's overated as a great place for tamales which, it is not!! So, if you're ok with a very small tamale give it a try.
Tamales are delicious Carnitas and the beans and all there bread are so delicious a must try everything spot. And for Christmas don't forget to put your order in best place in town yummy
First time me trying menudo and it tastes like warm water no flavor. They didn’t give me cilantro and cebolla . I didn’t know that I have to ask for it and pay extra. Never againFood: 1/5
Stop by, the carnitas were highly recommended and let me tell you fire. The carnitas are so flavorful. I also bought two dozen bolillos. I tried the cheese tamales they were on point. I also got some chicharrones I double recommend the chicharrones. So I made tortas with the carnitas oh boy a must try if you are in the area.
