Story

Lake Maria State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, created to provide a wilderness area within an easy drive of Minneapolis–Saint Paul. The park's amenities are designed primarily for hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders and consequently use remains light compared to other state parks around the metro area. It preserves a remnant of Big Woods atop a hilly, glacially-formed landscape dotted with lakes and wetlands. The park was established in 1963 west of Monticello, Minnesota.Natural historyThe St. Croix Moraine runs through the park. This rolling and uneven landform is a result of the Wisconsin glaciation and two previous glaciations. Irregular hills and ridges (kames) surround kettles, depressions left by melting blocks of ice during the glaciers' retreat.Flora and faunaThe park's vegetation consists of Big Woods mixed with old-growth oaks and dotted with numerous wetlands, ponds, and small lakes. The park is located near the northern limit of the Big Woods. The forest edge and wetland habitats support mammalian species including white-tailed deer, red fox, fisher, mole, gopher, mink, beaver, woodchuck, and muskrat. 205 bird species have been identified in the park. The park is noted for its population of Blanding's turtles, considered an endangered or threatened species by many U.S. states and Canada.

Beautiful park and good amenities. We go there frequently summer and winter for hiking, snowshoeing, and to participate in programming offered by the park. They did a winter camping demonstration and information day last year. Another day offered free snowshoe rentals for the kids to try it.

Good cross country trails when there is snow. Our hike was an intermediate level with a visit from the traveling deer.

We tried fishing in our kayak and I caught two crappies and Rick caught a bass or two. This was a few Sundays ago. Today we stopped and threw our line out from shore and nothing. I'm sure there are some fish there, we saw them jump but we are going to wait until it gets colder and try fall fishing. Otherwise a great park that is very quiet and close to cities. We like to walk around and spend the day with a lunch and our fishing poles. Live and fake bait work. Small lake for 20 horse motor or less, electric motor or paddle your kayak and canoe. Which one can rent on weekend.

Great range of hiking trails hilly or flat through woods, prairies and along lakes.

Fairly easy place to hike with varying trial lengths you can traverse. Paths are a little unsteady in some places, but not too bad. It's a beautiful preserved area, just wish I could have seen more animals.
