Story

Liberty Humane Shelter is a no-kill, non-profit organization run entirely off of donations. We currently have 4 employees. We currently are housed at a county maintained site, but hope to build a new facility in the near future. Liberty County Animal Control and Liberty Humane Shelter share the responsibilities of maintenance on the building and share the cost of utilities such as electricity and propane gas. The two facilities also share the responsibilty of cost of feeding and maintaining the animals such as food and cat litter, etc. We receive no other financial aid from the county or any other governmental agencies.

We appreciate the opportunity that Liberty County has extended to us to allow us to save the lives of the animals in Liberty County, and we depend on the community to support us through donations, grants from businesses, memberships, and fundraisers for us to pay the basics of our organization. These basics are food for the animals, cleaning supplies, medication/shots for the animals, propane costs, payroll costs, vet bills, and gasoline for the lawnmower.

Horrible shelter. They mistreat people who return animals for whatever reason, making them feel worthless. They lie to you and tell you what you want to hear about the animals so you adopted them. I adopted an American Bulldog from these people and when things weren't working out with the dog they began to treat my wife horribly and made her cry in there office. They demanded that we pay a $50 fee for returns or they would not accept the dog. When they told us "if anything happens or things don't work out just bring her back". No knowledge of a fee. State law says shelters can only charge money if the owner comes back to claim their animal after dropping them off within a certain amount of time. I told them about this and the "boss" got extremely pissed off. Oh well bottom line is don't deal with these unprofessional people.

The woman at the desk is busy sitting around and playing her cellphone while volunteers are cleaning the shelter. They don't take dogs walk even though the volunteers are willing to do it. The staffs don't clean the feces often enough and refuse to take them walk, so the poor dogs have to sit on their feces. I'd really like to report this shelter for animal abuse, but afraid that animal control might put the poor animals down..

My husband and I went there with our two little ones to look at some dogs . What a shock those poor animals. The place where they have the dogs isn't heated they have nothing to sleep on but concrete and the place stunk so bad of feces . In each cage there was pile of poop and urine and the dogs were so dirty like they hadn't had any baths for months . The water was just in tall pails and the food was in a small dish and for 6 puppies to share that one dish is ridiculous they looked half starved . We went to go inside to look at the cats and the litter boxes were full and no food in site . And they want 150 dollars for any animal there!!! My husband and I went outside to leave with our little ones and behind the building they have the dogs piled so high is garbage...just thrown there behind a fence no garbage bin nothing . And the people running this is one older guy and looks like high schoolers one didn't even know what neutered and spayed ment . Dear God someone take over this place and treat this animals how they are supposed to be treated .

The person working the desk was very rude. She was barely helpful until I threatened to complain about her not trying to help with taking an animal. She told me my responsibilities as far as the law is concerned rather then try to help take an animal off of my hands
