The Long Island Maritime Museum is committed to the research, preservation and interpretation of our region’s rich nautical heritage and the role of Long Island in our national maritime story. Whether it’s boat building, shipwrecks, shellfish harvesting or recreational boating that captures your imagination, it’s all here under our roofs, in our galleries and at our many events and programs. Kids will discover the links between the Island's maritime and natural histories. They will encounter some of the amazing creatures living in our local waters
WEST SAYVILLE, NEW YORK – Restored 1888 Oyster Sloop Priscilla, Floating Ambassador of the Long Island Maritime Museum, sets sail for a series of summer events. The vessel is scheduled to begin taking passengers out on the Great South Bay the first week of May.
The 122 year-old sailing ship has undergone continuous maintenance and repairs throughout her history, including a major restoration in 2002 and 2003. She was owned by several oystermen from New York and Connecticut before being donated to the Museum in 1976. Priscilla has been featured in a variety of special regattas throughout her history, including the Parade of Tall Ships at the “Salute to the Statue of Liberty” Fourth of July Celebration in 1986.
“By offering interactive public sailings, living history experiences and educational programs, the ship furthers Long Island Maritime Museum’s mission to motivate people to take care of the environment, the history and the culture of Long Island through education, preservation and example.” said the Museum’s Executive Director, Natasha Alexenko. “We are thrilled to share her with the community she serves.
”Owned and operated by the Long Island Maritime Museum, Priscilla acts as an ambassador through its diverse programs scheduled at many ports throughout the season. Passengers will be given an opportunity to help the crew navigate on the Great South Bay, learn about the ship’s history and the local environment or merely sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular view.
Ticket prices for public sails are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors 65+ and $15 for children under 17. Long Island Maritime Museum members receive special discounts and are invited on exclusive sailing excursions. For a full sailing schedule, guests can visit the Museum’s website at www.limariitme.org or call the Museum at (631) 854-4974.
Editors: Priscilla welcomes media aboard to observe operations and interview crew. For arrangements, contact David Swenson at [email protected]. Additional Priscilla facts are available upon request.
The Long Island Maritime Museum, which operates under an agreement with Suffolk County Parks, serves “To preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes”.
