The Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection.

Story

Located in the heart of Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum offers three exhibition buildings, gardens, outdoor sculpture, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and other historic buildings. Permanent and changing exhibitions along with the finest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in the country illustrate Long Island's rich cultural heritage. Public programs, music, workshops, lectures and special events are offered throughout the year. Membership is available.

The Long Island Museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities.

Had a great time. Staff was friendly and helpful not only about the museum but about local events and establishments of interest. The carriage displays were very interesting and well displayed. The bootleg display was informative as wer e the restored buildings and content. Would recommend to anyone looking for a pleasant, at your own pace experience.

I have not been to this museum in over 20 years. It has changed and expanded. The exhibition of carriages is extensive. I think it would enhance the experience to have docent tours once or twice a day. As there is so much to see in the carriage exhibit halls that it becomes overwhelming reading all the placards.There also is an a separate art museum and art installations on the property. The mobile sculptures and the crocheted tree cover art installation were impressive.

This is heaven for people who love carriages. The exhibit on bootlegging and the prohibition was really interesting and well structured.

The carriage connection is a must see! Overall very clean and organized. I would definitely want to take visitors to LI here.

Thought i would spend an hour visiting, stayed for three and I'm planning my return visit. Great if you love local Long Island history or history in general. The Art House was being renovated but I was able to walk in to the entry and peek at some neat stuff. Military discount available.
