Strange person So I emailed Tom inquiring as to whether stopping by was 9 -5 as he posted on Google or by appointment only since his website doesn’t show. Several days later he replies it is by appointment only. So I call to make an appt. He can’t do Saturday as he has to go buy bird food… ok so we set appointment for Sunday and he says to call before arriving. Thought this was a bit odd but ok. So I pack up the family and drive an hour to West Brookfield, I call before arriving as requested where he begins being very dramatic saying he has people there and can’t have more than one person looking so “Maybe in an hour or so”. I’m a bit shocked. OK so I knew he was a bit off, but really, he doesn’t understand the concept of an appointment? OK, I now explain to my kids and wife we have to kill an hour as he has someone there. Since we had just had lunch we drive around for an hour. West Brookfield is a fine town but there’s really nothing much to do there. An hour later we arrive and I call again to insure there isn’t someone still there. Tom answers and accuses me of hanging up on him during the last call (which is completely false) and says because of that “I don’t think you have the right temperament to buy my birds!” and hangs up. Wait… What? So he incorrectly accuses me of something and then does exactly what he just accused me of? Since this conversation took place over my vehicles hands free system, everyone in the vehicle heard it and nobody had any desire to meet this odd fellow after listening to him. So just beware if you contact him you might buy some birds or you may just waste some time & gas but at the very least you’ll at least get to speak with a Loon.

Healthy, beautiful birds, but not handled much. Fearful. We purchased 2 lovebirds from Tom in May. The purchase included a cage, TONS of toys, 2 bags of food and a lovebird book. He has a lot of birds but, even though, the bird areas were clean and the cages clean as well. All the birds had plenty of toys. He makes a special blend of food, so these birds seem super healthy. If you are looking for birds that are used to be handled, though, we have not found that to be the case. Even after 3 months, they still freak out when we even put our hands in their cage to clean it or move toys around. They panic and get stressed if we try to hold them. Our purpose of getting the birds was for my daughter to have some bird friends that would sit on her shoulder and they are just terrified of us. We will continue to work on them, of course, and I'm sure it's possible to "tame" them, but if you are looking for birds that are used to human contact and being handled comfortably, I would be wary. He's happy to show you all the birds available and you can hold them, so feel the birds out on their comfort level. Maybe we just got a more fearful pair. We are on about a year and a half of owning this lovebird pair and nothing has changed. They are terrified of us. They, however, don't seem to mind the dog. Go figure. They are healthy, playful and happy with eachother, at least. I wouldn't have bought them knowing they wouldn't have any interest interacting with us. We have tried a lot of methods. They've been out of the cage, but just end up stressed, panting, flying into walls. They obviously had no experience being out of their cage ever, so I feel we were deceived on how often they were handled.

Tom is a great guy to deal with - we had many delays before picking up our birds, largely due to moving to a different city - Tom was very understanding and patient during this time. The lovebirds we purchased are healthy, lively and full of fun - they are quite active, and play with their toys for hours. They also have learned that their feeding time comes right after the dog is fed, so when they see the dog's dish placed on the floor they jump around their seed and vegetable dish vocalizing loudly as a reminder that their feeding time has arrived. When we sit at our kitchen counter to eat breakfast, they sit on their food dish and eat too....; Their presence is cheerful and folks who visit find them beautiful and entertaining... Right now we are listening to a live performance of The Metropolitan Opera, and they are singing along - we enjoy them very much.
