This was our second visit to Mary's Cafe on our way home from visiting family in Abilene. Fantastic! I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak stuffed baked potato. It was the perfect amount of food for those of us wanting to keep our Texas citizenship by consuming chicken fried steak at least once a year, without the too much too rich food hangover after. My husband ordered the "Downtown Special" which included cheese enchiladas AND chicken fried steak! Mary's Cafe is the only place I know of that gets both southern food and Mexican food spot on! The cheese enchiladas were better than Joe T. Garcia's. Didn't know that was possible. The service was very friendly and I believe it was Mary, herself who checked on our dining experience and appreciated our return visit.

The food is good because it's homemade, literally nothing is processed, but you have to wait longer because of that. The employees aren't that happy, the kitchen sucks, they aren't organized and I feel like this amazing business could become a multi million dollar business if Mary would just care enough to become more organized and invest more into it. But she's famous and her food is good enough to sell its self already so she's just doing what she is comfortable with. The food is good, but be ready to wait for it, the service isn't the best but they are most likely waiting your whole section and cooking all of your food also because of the lack or organization so please tip well. Overall the food alone is worth 3 stars but the other 2 come from lack of great service and lack of modern touch to add those 5 stars.

Hands-down one of the best chicken fried steak places in the state, Mary's Cafe has near-iconic status. You can hear the cooks in the kitchen pounding flour into the thin pieces of beef, which taste like they've been simply seasoned with salt and pepper, then pan-fried to a beautiful consistency. If you're a fan of chicken fried steak with a thick, crispy crust, you will not like Mary's Cafe. However, if you like a thin, tender breading, served with homemade cream gravy and fresh mashed potatoes, you should visit soon.

The only problem we encountered was waiting time for food. We were seated immediately and our drink order taken. Arrived at a very busy time on a Saturday afternoon. Arrived around 2:30 and didn't get our food until 4:00. Long wait for my granddaughter with her 3 year old. A large group of motorcyclists contributed to the wait due to their large. Good place to eat ample food. Just timing.

After being referred to this place the prices on the menu are equivalent to cheesecake factory for cracker barrel products. The side are deliver by the can and enjoy paying$1.75 for each one. If that doesn't bother you, then please message me as I've got plenty of stuff for sale I'd like to sell you.
