Mert's serves southern fare. Collards, black eyed peas, and cornbread...all delicious. It's always crowded so come early and be prepared to wait. There were 4 in our party. It took forever for our drink order to be taken and then even longer for our orders to be taken. In all honesty, I think they only had 2 waiters on a Saturday night. Not sure why either. Anyway, the other 3 people in my party ordered good full plates of food. I ordered a blackened chicken salad (due to allergies not diet). Their plates were delivered but I had to wait an extra 10 minutes to get my salad. A salad! The chicken was good but honestly it was thrown together so fast that stuff was falling off my plate and not in a good way!
I'm sure we will go back but I won't be looking forward to it. On the other hand, my husband said his real food was delicious.
Bottom line... If you have allergies or are a picky eater this place may not be for you. If you love your food cooked like Granny then this is a must while in Charlotte.

Small and friendly restaurant in uptown Charlotte. The place is decorated with nostalgic pictures and antique memorabilia from different stars. The menu was not extensive and easy to read. They also post specials on a chalk board near the kitchen.
The food was pretty good, the cornbread was delicious and the cakes were mouthwatering. People in my party ordered the ribs, that had no bones and a little too much sauce. The salmon cakes were fried just right and tasty, no overwhelming flavors. The fried chicken was moist and juicy. The sides were also good and they had a good selection of veggies.
Parking is a challenge especially if you have issues walking. I was lucky to find a pay to park spot in front of Mert's. If you are in a wheelchair it may take some manuvering inside the restaurant due to tables being so close.
Overall I recommend Mert's if you want to eat soul food this is a great place to start.

Everything we have eaten in Charlotte has been great. Until we ate at Mert’s Heart and Soul. The yams were poor tasting at best. I couldn’t wait to try southern fried chicken. It took one hour to deep fry a small tasteless chicken leg quarter. The salmon cake, beef ribs, and fried cat fish were good. Fried tomatoes, collard greens, chicken tenders, and home fries not so great. The cornbread was great and so was our waiter. The cornbread isn't worth the hour wait and so so food to go back.

My wife and I was here for VFW National Convention, we saw this place on Diners Drive Inn and Dives show, The Place is down the street from the hotel and we went in and was seated. The Young lady that waited on us was very friendly. The food is worth the wait. I had shrimp and grits and my wife had the chicken greens. I want to say even I came back that evening and dinner and the food was great again. If there is anything wrong was the restroom, I have to say Brother Mert please you need upgrade the restrooms. That is only reason I did not give it five stars. I have to say when your in Charlotte please stop in and try the food you will not be disappointed.

Food: good taste and reasonable proportions. I had the fish and dirty rice. Fish was great, rice was good but not my idea of dirty rice (ground beef was lacking). Fries Green Tomatoes appetizer was pretty good as well. The service left something to be desired. It was busy so will give some slack, but our waitress seemed overwhelmed. The kitchen had confusion and were barking at the wait staff because they were cooking too much or too little of certain dishes due to miscommunication. Our waitress spilled sweet tea on our table (and us), but was apologetic. I would give it another try - just wouldn't go out of my way to go there.
