1701 NW 30th Ave, Miami, FL 33125 is currently home to the Miami Police Department, but did you know the original purpose of the building? What if I were to tell you that the building was originally an animation studio that competed with Disney? The Fleischer Studios originated in New York but bought a piece of land to build a new studio in the late 1930's as a result of a major strike that happened. The Fleischers produced Popeye, Betty Boop, Superman, and tons more cartoons as well as two full length features: Gulliver's Travels and Mr. Bug Goes to Town. The Fleischers, unfortunately, ran into some troubles as Paramount, their distributor, was more interested in Popeye, Mr. Bug flopped due to it being released the eve of Pearl Harbor, and personal issues were going on behind the scenes. As a result, Paramount through many tricky contracts took full ownership of the studio. The Fleischers were out, the studio became Famous Studios, and the operation moved back to New York leaving the building unoccupied. The building has become other things such as I believe a day care center, and now Miami Police uses that building, but it would be nothing like it was when animators, inkers, painters, and a bunch of great classic cartoons rolled out of the building. The building still stands, and while thankfully not abandoned, it's still a ghostly reminder of the Golden Age of Animation.
