I have been going to the Milpitas Spine Center for about a year. I am a 28 year old woman with degenerative disc disease with herniations at L4-L5 and L5-S1. I came to see Dr. Riley a year ago because I was tired of living my life feeling that I was constantly on the brink of throwing my back out, I was frustrated and emotional about how unstable and how much pain I experienced all the time, and I was DEDICATED to not turn to using muscle relaxers or narcotics to treat my symptoms. I began treating with the Milpitas Spine Center three times a week for about four months, and as my body began maintaining and holding adjustments longer, the doctors cut me back to two adjustments per week, then to one visit every five days. I am currently only treating with them once every seven days and I am THRILLED to report that I have not thrown out my back once since I’ve began treating with them (keep in mind, this used to happen to me at least once a year, if not twice). The treatment I’ve received at Milpitas Spine Center has been truly remarkable. Both Dr. Riley and Dr. Patel work together and collaborate in order to best meet your needs. I began treating with Dr. Riley for about six months, and I ended up switching to Dr. Patel because my body seemed to respond a little differently to Dr. Patel’s adjustment style, and I am impressed and admire how professionally both doctors handled this situation. There was no ego invested. They want you to be treated by the doctor who meets your body’s needs. Everyone responds to adjustment styles differently. I had to put a lot of my own work into getting to where I am. It took a big commitment to go to these appointments so frequently during a month, it also took a lot of patience because it took my body a long time to learn how to maintain the doctors’ adjustments. I also had to change my workout routine. Working out has become a HUGE part of my life and maintaining the stability in my back. If I take a week off from working out my core, I feel a very noticeable difference in my body’s overall stability, especially my back. One of the biggest lessons I learned with Dr. Patel is when I was hitting a plateau about 9 months into treatment and began getting frustrated, the doctor suggest I chart my pain and daily activities for 30 days. I learned SO MUCH about what activities brought on pain that I wasn’t aware of. I was able to identify a pattern with certain activities and I was able to begin limiting or eliminating the activities that triggered pain and flare-ups in my back. I also learned, through the journaling process, that my diet was playing a huge role in my back pain! I discovered I hadn’t been eating enough for the activity level I was maintaining and for my height and size. I made some very simple adjustments to my diet by adding healthy fats, proteins and calories to my diet, and my pain decreased VERY noticeably and my overall strength increased. It was a huge personal breakthrough for me and I had no idea how my inefficient diet was impacting my pain levels. (I wish I had done this journaling at the beginning of my treatment with Milpitas Spine Center). The front office staff is wonderful and helpful, and the doctors seem willing to work with people with a whole variety of issues. They just want to see people feel better, and they are dedicated to figuring out a way to work with you, with or without insurance. It may seem like a big investment, but I will confidently attest that this one of the best investments I’ve made. My health is worth it.
