Mother Tongue was a delightful gem! The ambiance, music, decor, and sunset views were just perfection. Our group shared several appetizers including the Three Spreads Toasted Walnut Muhammara, Whipped Avocado, and Beet Hummus with Pita bread, the Yellowtail Crudo, the grilled oyster mushrooms, and the Korean beef short ribs. Everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the Toasted Walnut spread and the Yellowtail Crudo. For my main, I tried the Roasted Spanish Octopus - it was delicate and just the right amount of food for me. The others in my party tried the Salmon, the Lamb, the Duck, the Wagyu, and the Sea Bass. Everything was wonderful! The wine list had good variety and we were pleasantly surprised to learn that Wednesdays were 1/2 off bottle night! Score! Our servers were pleasant and knowledgeable. I wholeheartedly recommend this lovely restaurant. It is good value for the amazing food and wine, and has a beautiful view also.
I went a couple weeks ago and got the beet hummus as a starter. It was fine. After that, I got the bass. It was a bit small, but still amazing. Although, I did have to send it back and have another dish brought to me because the first one had shrimp in it. On the menu, it didn’t mention shrimp. But again, the bass and the curry-like sauce that it was served in were delicious. The chef sent out a sashimi dish that was a bit overwhelming, but very good. He even came to the table to ask me how I liked it. I also loved the Verdeca wine and the cocktail with saffron. Very different. Definitely plan on coming back!
Vegan approved!!!! It’s Playmeite here to give you another episode of her plant based meal adventures. So Mother Tongue has a variety of plant based options. Their menu is separated in a way where you can see everything in detail including the benefits and ingredients of each dish. Ambience is wonderful. Food was delicious. Staff is knowledgeable. I mean my friend and I asked what they would recommend, and our waitress gave us a whole essay of what she thought. in general it was helpful as I appreciate people that give you more info than less. I tried the hummus, the mushroom dish, and so much more I can’t even remember lol.. Presentation is lovely, there’s something for everyone. The place is hidden and low key in an alley as I’m sure everyone else has mentioned lol. But worth it and a hidden gem around the Hollywood area. Cheers and love!!!! - Playmeite
Very cute dining room with bright color pallets. Perfect for spring and summer. Outdoor was closed to a buy-out so we were not able to be seated outside. It’d be so nice to watch the sunset though! The food was great, light, healthy but very tasty. Cocktails were delightful too, well balanced. I have to mention the highlight of the night was the dessert. You must order the strawberry panna cotta!! Parking is valet only. The only feedback we had is the background music was so loud that we had to ‘yell’ at each other. The service was a bit slow at first but overall it was alright. Will come back for brunch next time!
Mother Tongue is an experience worth repeating. Chicken skewer and slider appetizers are incredible! We ordered the steak tartare which is uniquely impressive, salmon is delicately seasoned and cooked to perfection and the steak is absolutely incredible. Portions are perfect. Filtered water is a pleasant surprise as many restaurants serve nasty tap water, thirst quenching OJ is legit freshly squeezed and refreshing and my delicious Old Fashioned was finished before dinner was served. Hidden gem Mother Tongue is a lovely option for any occasion. Thank you for having us. Chef is an excellent choice for your kitchen!
The atmosphere here was amazing I love the hidden way to get to the restaurant - beautiful setting and the drinks were like chemistry well put together tasty and very strong. The service was spectacular and professional - everyone was very hospitable and charming however it was very confusing since we had about 12 different people come to our table including three different people refilling our water and two or three people taking our order. It felt like there was someone at our table very frequently so I would have given four stars except they really were very sweet. As for the food - the flavors were exquisite and unique. One of the best dishes was the scallops it was made to perfection very fresh with light flavoring that did not take away from the scallop. For the other dishes the main issue was they were either too small or included a very bizarre and uncomfortable texture within the food - the sea bass was like heaven but quite a small piece even with the treasures of seafood within the sauce, the new mushroom dish was beautifully done but the many chickpeas were dry and crackled and overpowered the taste. Unfortunately the risotto was a failure. The risotto itself was underdone and even though the sauce was very cheesy which is a plus they used some kind of cheese or flavor that made it extremely hard to swallow. The desserts were very unique - the panicotta was amazing with delicate and finally tuned flavors which again was such a small portion that I wish I had ordered another one. Instead we got the black forest dessert which was both overwhelming and confusing at the same time. The pieces that appear to look like chocolate or some type of gelatin and the chocolate was at the bottom with some bread like casing. All of this was swimming in red cherry foam so the flavors surprisingly did not mix well and even though it was enjoyable to eat something that looked like a massacre the textures made the experience a bit gory. Overall enjoyable but I came out hungry. I would probably come back for the drinks and maybe appetizers for the unique tastes and the fun of Russian roulette with texture. Dietary restrictions: The menu is very flexible according to the staff for dietary restrictions
This place is really cute and clean. The music wasn’t too loud, you can enjoy a conversation or phone call. The menu for lunch isn’t super extensive but was super happy to see plant based options. Unfortunately my party didn’t have the best service. My friend ordered the hanger steak, when everyone’s order came out it was just the steak and no sides. We asked about the yuca fries and sauce that came with the steak but our waiter said since it was after 3 we only got the steak… even though she ordered before the cut off time and double checked with the server if it was too late to order this. They eventually gave us the yuca fries that came with the hanger steak and we had to go back and forth with the waiter to get at least chimichurri sauce since they didn’t provide any of the sauces that came with the lunch meal. Who wants to eat a dry streak and dry yucca? When the bill came, the yuca fries were charged separately at the dinner pice $18. Overall there was no communication and we had to advocate so hard for my friend’s meal and to have the price corrected. The whole experience really left a bad taste in our mouths and ruined our lunch. We just wanted some girl time and fun. The mushroom larb salad was delicious and vegan friendly, the cocktails were really flavorful and not too sweet. I’d love to come back but with a different server.
We stopped here for a quick drink, but even that short experience was enough to win us over. This brand new space is extraordinarily trendy, and you'll find a well dressed, sophisticated crowd to match. The food is upscale and pricey but, judging by looks, seems delicious. Our drinks were unique and incredible. The service was really, really fantastic. The hostess was very gracious and I've never had such cool, fun, engaging, and polite bartenders shout out Jarred and Keith. This is the kind of place you take someone you want to impress. Even on a Monday there was a fair crowd so be sure to make a reservation. This place is surely about to blow up in popularity. Loved it! Note: To get in, check out the alleyway between Sycamore and La Brea. You're looking for a nook with an elevator to the 4th floor.
Instagram made me try this spot & you should too : The Golden Hour here Wednesday thru Sunday is perfectly situated between 4 & 6 : with $10 wine pours and $5 Mother Tongue sliders by chef Michael Mina : props to kind Douglas and welcoming hostess Sophia who gave me the tour and was articulate and fun : I love that this spot has opened and there is room for us locals who frequently attend and celebrate all local happy hours : this area is also about to have a major boom when the cement factory goes and a massive 34 story tower moves in. As well as, the proposed Pink Line subway stop here at La Brea & Sunset : thank you Mother Tongue for taking root here first! I love what you do and absolutely will be back for Brunch!
A new favorite! Service and food were immaculate. I got fish crudo, salmon bowl, flatbread and hummus, and rose wines. This was enough for two. This was an excellent experience after a workout downstairs, thank you!Food: 5/5
