One word to describe this rathole: Gross. Seriously. Birds flying in the building, the smell of fish and Asian detergent in the air (something I, as an Asian, can't even handle), and pools of water on the ground near the fish area. Just a chaotic mess. This is an embarrassment to the Asian community in Austin. There are plenty more stores to go to.

A paradise for fish eaters from Asia. I found around 20 varieties of Asian fishes which I don’t find anywhere else in Austin. I heard newly opened Ranch 99 will compete with MT Supermarket.

Largest Asian market in town, but a little harder to get to than the one I visit most often. I have been shopping at MT for ~20 years, since they were at their original location down next to Kim Phung. MT has the largest, best-stocked meat counter in town -- not just of Asian markets, but any grocery store. They also have an excellent seafood counter. The rest of the store is a wonderland of products whose labels I can't read. Someday I would love to know what's in all those cans, bottles and boxes.

As someone who grew up in Houston Chinatown, I had very high expectations. When I passed by Austin's Chinatown, my immediate reaction was...that's it? It's a tiny strip center with one tapioca place, foot massage, marketplace and a few restaurants for good food. The prices in Austin's Chinatown was a bit higher than the ones available in Houston. If I'm ever really craving for something, I'd splurge. However, most of the time, I'd much rather drive the three hours back to Houston to get a weekend of variety. I know this is Austin and Austin != Houston, but I hope it'll one day get to that level. I miss the food I grew up with and Panda Express does not even match it. 🤤 It's not readily available, but still a good spot to check out and explore what it has to offer. Btw, parking is not an issue but the Asian drivers are. 😂 Including me, hahaha.

Every time I walk into MT's market, there is something new that I haven't seen before. This place is so much fun, and I want to eat everything! They have a huge selection of groceries and spices. Everything is much cheaper. You can get a whole bundle of Thai basil for a dollar!
