Story

Opened in 1977, the Museum of Florida History collects, preserves, exhibits, and interprets evidence of past and present cultures in Florida, and promotes knowledge and appreciation of this heritage.

As the state history museum, it focuses on artifacts and eras unique to Florida's development and on roles that Floridians have played in national and global events.

Through exhibits, educational programs, research, and collections, the Museum reflects the ways that people have shaped and reacted to their cultural and natural environments.

One of the best museums I have been to! It is clean and the exhibits are well taken care of. There is a great mix of interactive exhibits and a small play room called "Grandma's Attic". The information provided is broken down into chunks so it's easy to absorb the history if you have only a little bit of time.

This museum has a wonderful display of Florida history and also a nice variety of traveling exhibits. It's free to enter and well worth an hour or so of your day. Florida has a rich and varied history, this is a good place to learn a bit about it. The museum is located downtown and is near the state capital building and the Florida supreme court. Go ahead, step into history!

A great museum in the heart of Tallahassee telling the story of Florida! The Museum of Florida History provides a permanent physical recreation and exhibition of the history of the state of Florida and its inhabitants, starting from its pre-historic beginnings. A surprisingly large exhibition space winds you through the timeline of history and offers well crafted exhibits, in which you can get lost for hours. In addition, there is large hall which houses the changing exhibition space, most recently on quilting and movies filmed in Florida. Overall, its a great addition to a tour of Tallahassee's museums, with a short walk to either the Challenger Center or the Florida Historic Capital Museum.

(Full disclosure alert: I absolutely love living in Tallahassee. No, I wasn't born here. In fact, I haven't yet lived a third of my years here - but I'm here for the duration) Ok - that said, the museum is truly a gift to our community and it's visitors. Offering a rich collection of artifacts, information, art, and "cool stuff" in general, museum visitors can expect unrivaled depth and breadth of historical Florida coverage. The rotating gallery exhibition is a treat - just like the more permanent displays. We come (easily) six times a year. Oh - and it's free. That doesn't mean the contribution box should go unnoticed.

This superlative (donation based) free Florida history museum's been excellently well reviewed by fellow yelpers ad nauseam so I'll keep it short. Free garage and street parking on the weekends! You could blow through in a few hours or if you're like me, could spend the whole afternoon and want to return again and again. Was especially tickled with the Central Florida bits I could find and really appreciated the artifacts and write ups on our Indigenous peoples. Lots of Civil War stuffs. The Silver Springs diarama's impressive. And of course, Love the cars. :)
